A 100 Pound 2 Year Old?

We've seen this so many times on Maury- Severely Overweight Children That Is. When is this going to stop? I'll tell you how I think this starts. I see so many mothers putting a bottle in their childs mouth everytime they cry. They don't realize that the baby doesn't know when to stop. They get so full until their spitting up and crying probably from a belly ache and there their mother goes again with another bottle. Eventually the children get used to being so stuffed that as they get older it's not formula they crave, it's food. Some mothers think that this is cute to have a child this overweight. While a lot of people love to see big babies, they often forget about health problems. Am I the only person that has noticed this?

This is a mess.I agree with you on the way food and bottles are used.I think the child needs to learn that confort does not come from food and maye the parents need to stop using the bottle as a confort.I think becuase they do this so much they do not know when the child is hungry or needs something else.Do you think this is abuse?I do in a way.

Yes some kids have medical prroblems where they can't help but to be BIG. Just like some adults. People say well they should go on a diet & all. But have you ever wondered WHY these ppl are big & cant help it? I also agree, like I have seen Maury Povich, parents dont care how ,much there kids eat or what they eat. People shouldnt judge other people on how big or small they are.

Yes i know what you are saying babys are over fed so muck these days just the size of the portions that people serve is what does the damage . The only way to stop the rise in the childhood obesity is to better educate parents in the role of food preperation and the type of food to serve their children. Then if that fails action should be taken on the parents because it is their actions that have caused the problem not the childs. There are conditions that cause a weight problems not all are deitary related .

Yes, it's unfortunate. I think life is so fast and harried these days (fast paced and demanding) that some give in to the temptation, to as you said pacify a child with a bottle, and later food... But these things will influence the child's whole life.

Morbidly Obese child - Morbidly Obese child that eat's McDonalds supersize meals every day.
I have noticed this as well. I forget which talk show it was - I saw it when I was getting my nails done a few years ago and it was about Obese children. This mother took her kid to McDonald's every day. He was somewhere between 3 and 5 years old. He didn't eat happy meals like most little kids (which is still gross) but he ate 2 super sized value meals per visit. That is ridiculous! Kids don't need to be eating that much for one thing. They don't need to be eating McDonald's everyday for another. And they should be eating balanced healthy meals. I think I might have a photo of this kid from some joke email that was going around. I recognized him from the talk show. I had a friend who only shopped at health food stores. Her baby never touched candy because the candy affects their growing bodies. This child is much older now. She is healthy and brilliant. These bad foods that kids are eating combined with the fact that they don't go outside to play anymore... as they are inside playing video games... is deadly. Do you think a 100 pound baby could have a heart attack? When do you think all this obescity in children is going to start taking it's toll?

I've seen those shows, too. I can't stand it when the mother says she doesn't care what anyone says and she'll feed her child as much as he wants to eat. I thank my mom for not being like that. Yes, I was a sickly child and had problems eating and keeping food down. But, when I was well, my mom didn't just let me eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. And, we tried to have at least one green vegetable at lunch or dinner.

You're not the only person to notice this trend and there are a lot of reasons for it. Obviously, not good reasons. I recently retired from teaching "tweens" and, for the most part, parents give in to their kids rather than set boundaries. It's easier, let's face it. Parents tend to be overscheduled, overloaded, and feeding their kids a balanced healthy diet is one of those "battles" they'd rather not fight.

I do see a lot of mother put a bottle in there mouth, instead holding themor seeing what they need. But I do think genes have something to do with it. My kids have to different dads. My son is like my ex husand skinny, my son weights 62lb and he is 10 1/2. My daughter is like her father. She just turned 5 and weights 45 lbs. And they were not feed any different as babies. Now they eat differently now, most of the time they eat the same amount.

Yes, I have seen those Maury episodes with those severely obese children. That is horrible, and the parents think it's cute?? It's dangerous! I wish they would wake up... I wouldn't think it's so cute if my 3 year old who weighed 150 lbs was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes!!

No you are not the only one. Over eating in America (and I take it your are American?) is such a huge problem. An vverweight child is a far worse thing than an overwieght adult. And when I personally see a child overweight (not by a few pounds, but VERY overweight) I can't help but feel terrible for them and blame the parent completely. Maybe I am being unfair. I am a mother, however, of 2 healthy and thin children-My son is 7 and weighs about 60 pounds and my daughter is 4 and weighs a mere 32.

there is also a disorder that causes children to persistently over forage for food, i forgot the name of the disorder but something in the brain doesnt allow them to feel full and they will go out of thier way to eat everything .

Maybe but that's also an easy excuse for fat lazy people to sit around eating all day and not doing any exercise.

You are not alone at all. I have seen those shows too and they make me cry for the child. These parents think it is easier to give in than to set boundaries. My husband is a give in kind of person but when it counts he will flat out say no and that is it. The child dosnt know any better but the parent should and instead of offering McDonalds all the time because it is convient they should be cooking at home with vegetables, and baked chicken not fried. It is sad that the only vegitable most of these kids know is the frenchfry because it is potatoe. I dont watch those shows any more because to me that is a form of abuse and I cant sit here and watch it. It breaks my heart too much.

This must be a skinny person who started this discussion, because if you were a big person you would know how stuff like this happens, I agree it is terrible for a 2 year old to weigh that much, but maybe the parent is trying there best, if they were on t.v., they must have wanted help for it, you shouldn't be so quick to judge others, I am just stating my opinion just like you, so there is need to get mad, I agree with some of what you are saying, but we don't know their what is going on in there life unless we are in it.

No, you are not the only one to notice this. I have noticed this too, but I know that it happens for a lot of reasons. I feel sorry for the kids and parents. It's a shame but I also blame it on education. I don't feel that the public is educated enough on these issues.

No, I worry about obese children too. Your thoughts about the bottle are very insightful.

no you definately arnt the only person who notices this. That was the problem I had as a child and now I am suffering obesity and health issues as an adult. But then again, we have to make sure society knows the difference between over weight and healthy. Some people think that the right weight for a certain height makes them look fat and that is just unhealthy to be any skinnier. Image is such an issue that its hard to figure out.

Lionkitty I can´t more then agree with u..people thinks that the problem here is that other eating wrong or are lazy but there are also pills or other around that part who effect people so bad ...so when we anyway are on this thinking ..many people gettings stressed today..working working kids cleaning activitets and what ever they put themself into..instead for learn to take it more easy and not stress around all over...this ends often in panic, stress and depressing..who in next step ends in pills for keep your brain running ...and often are this pill a big reson til that people getting fat...run the brain with pills and do not care about the body...isen´t that a nice world ...

I agree to a certain extent. I think there are various other factors to this issue. Genetics, POOR DIET, lack of exercise, and of course shutting up a child w/ food. Most of the families that have obese children are obese themselves!!! They say family eating habits form in their children.
