It is generally safer to eat veggies, beans, pulses etc., of course (pesticides and chemical fertilizers have a pretty bad impact as well. The extractive food industry that fuels western societies is well described in a book I read - The Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlossler. The "food chain" from Animal farm to Supermarket Shelf that is described there will turn off even the most committed carnivore from eating Industrially produced meat or poultry. I would imagine conditions of meat production, slaughter and transportation in developing countries is a lot worse.

Hey Bay leaf is a spice used to make curries and Biryanis (Indian cuisine) Its called Tej Pattha in Hindi..and it definitely isnt a vegetable!!
