What about forbidding old cars travel to reduce air pollution?

In Lombardy, a region of Northern Italy, the regional government decided to forbid cars sold before 1993 to travel on Lombard roads. The claimed reason is to reduce air pollution. But hints show it would be useless: - air pollution levels never reduced during the experimental stops of all the traffic in Milan that occurred in some weekends in the last years - the only matter that sometimes exceeds the limits is PM10, and only diesel vehicles expel PM10, but this law stops gasoline cars and bikes too - in Italy 65% of new sold cars is diesel and most old cars use gasoline; that means PM10 will grow up Moreover, I think this law is wrong because: - a law cannot force citizen to buy a new car - it's poor people who still drive old cars - ancient cars will disappear - now they stop 14 years old cars, but tomorrow they could stop 10, then 8, or 6 years old cars, forcing people to often change their cars. To all the Italians, and to all the people who plan to come to Italy by car, there is a petition against this law: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?Euro10 What do you think about such a law? Is there something like that in your country?

in australia we have lots of people driving around in cars that are like 30 years old. i hate those cars because alot of them are old bombs that have alot of smoke coming out of them. if the car has been restored i belive its okay because those people tend to take care of there car and use more as a sunday car. they should do the same sort of thing here in australia no car made b4 1990 drive on australian roads. so my car is okay its a 2000 modle ford falcon

Well, if a car is well maintained why can't it travel? I agree that smoky cars should be banned, and we already have laws requiring mandatory controls every two years, including exhaust controls. In Australia there are no diesel cars, right? Here over 65% of new car sales are diesel, and new diesel cars pollute much more than 15 y.o. gasoline cars... But forbidding old cleaner cars is demagogically better than forbidding new smokier cars!

I think it is very good to forbid these old cars, altrough there are not too many of these old cars they should be forbidden because they make air polution. Good luck!

1) Why would an old car pollute less in a developing country than in a developed one? 2) An old gasoline car expels much less PM10 than a new diesel car, and other emissions have been under control for many years, since non-catalytic cars are few: the only emission that reach the european limit in the air is PM10 3) What if YOU had to spend more than 10000 euro to buy a new car? Maybe you want to buy an old car for a little price, since you live in Indonesia...
