Cannibalism - the act of eating one of your own species (humans eating another human) Do you think this practice is socially acceptible? What if you HAD to, if you were starving to death? What are the medical effects? I've heard that it messes up your brain, because the same genes are being consumed, something like that, that it makes you crazy. Is this true?Animals who resort to cannibalism: female red-back spider, black widow spider, praying mantis.

Okay, what I would like to know, is how are these cannibals acquiring the bodies to eat; referring to the ones who do it regularily and not as a last resort. Wouldn't they have to murder someone in order to eat them, unless they just went around looking for people who are in the process of dieing.

Good point! I think that if you were stranded, it'd be whoever you were stranded with. But have you seen "King Kong", the latest version? In that one, they go to King Kong's island and all the tribal people jump out, ready to eat the guys on the ship. So yes, that's murder. So you have 2 guilt trips to live with, you murdered someone, and you ate them. But if you have to eat to survive, is it murder or neccesity?

i think its pretty sick to eat another human but there again its probably because its not the done thing. If we'd all been raised eating human then it probably wouldn't be such an awful thought.

That's a good point! :) You should always try a different route before you resort to cannibalism.

Cannibalism is really a sick act.Right in the world of the sane its just not done we dont go around eating humans. So the thought of it turns most peoples stomaches. If I was in a situation that its live or die. I seriously might have to eat someones leg or something. It depends on alot of factors now if we were an island(like in castaway) Im sure there are fish and such that we can catch and eat varies berries that are not posion. But now if we where in the artic (like in Alive)nothing but ice and snow freezing and strave, if it would help me possible live a bit longer and my friend die first and I get to thinking about my kids and such. I bet they'd start to look pretty tasty to me.....

Morally and normally cannibalism is not acceptible in social life. It is dangerous for social life. It is contrary to the teachings of every religion in the world. It is written on the bible, you should love your neighbour, not to eat your neighbour.

You're not supposed to eat your neighbor, but in the Bible, some cultures weren't allowed to eat pork, either. Do you like ham, pork chops, ribs??? Is that a sin too?

Cannibalism (from Spanish canĂbal, in connection with alleged cannibalism among the Caribs), also called anthropophagy (from Greek anthropos "man" and phagein "to eat") is the act or practice of humans eating other humans. In zoology, the term cannibalism is extended to refer to any species eating members of its own kind. Care should be taken to distinguish among ritual cannibalism sanctioned by a cultural code, cannibalism by necessity occurring in extreme situations of famine, and cannibalism by mentally disturbed persons.

Thank you for that clarification, that's a good point, there are very different reasons for why a human would eat another human - in some cultures, people think it is the highest honor for a god or king to be eaten by his people.

if that is the last resort then i would surely do it, its the survival instinct in man that makes him do it. i would bet that if anyone of you have been put in that situation would not at all die starving but resort to cannibalism if its the last available option.

I could not do it. Even if it is for survival, I could not live with myself afterwards. I would have nightmares for the rest of my life.

Ever wonder what a human tastes like? I think that eating something like a horse or a dog, which some people do, is just as gross as the thought of heating a human.

Cannibalism does exist, in Zaire, the rebels kill the pygmies and eat them. It is also common in Central Africa. I know someone who is an eyewitness to this, 2 years ago.

I didn't realize this was still going on, I mean I assumed in emergency situations, etc. but I wasn't aware that it is still widely practiced. I'm sorry about your friend/acquaintance having to see this and am glad it wasn't her/him that was being eateN!

By all accounts, we don't taste very nice so I probably wouldn't want to try it! I've heard from documentaries etc that all the chemicals we put into our bodies make the meat taste horrible. Not that it makes a difference because I could never be a cannibal anyway! I'm sure there are other things you could live on. Look at Ray Mears, he finds things to eat and catches and cooks them with little more than twigs etc! You don't see him eating the locals!

The thought and the act of cannibalism in those civilized societies where it is "banned" is abhorent to say the least. However, most humans have the instinct to survive and as a result may be forced to do something that is againsts their better judgement. Who can really say they wouldn't do it if faced with that scenario? Sitting here talking about it leads me to say that I couldn't do it. And, I might add, I sincerely hope that I am never faced with that situation.

I have not seen that movie Cannibal Holocaust. Oh, but speaking of cannibal movies, anyone remember Silence of the Lambs? Hannibal Lector "ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti". What I didn't realize is that Hannibal Lector has an amazing backstory. Hannibal Lecter was born in Lithuania in 1938 to a wealthy aristocratic family. His father was a count and his mother a descendant of the famous Visconti family of Milan. In Hannibal he is said to be a cousin of the artist Balthus. He had a younger sister named Mischa. When Lecter was six, a group of German deserters retreating from Russia shelled his family's estate, killing his parents and most of the servants. Lecter, his sister, and other local children were rounded up by the group of deserters to be used as sustenance during the cold Baltic winter. Mischa was killed and eaten, but young Lecter managed to escape. It is believed that this event would shape the rest of Lecter's life; Harris writes that it destroyed his faith in God, and he believed from then on that there was no real justice in the world. Years later, he would come to see Clarice Starling as a surrogate for his sister. Wow. And although Anthony Hopkins is who we remember as Hannibal Lector, he was also played by Brian Cox in "Manhunter".

cannaibalism is not at all justifiable and if i had got caught in such a situation,I would prefer to die rather than to eat a fellow human.

Even cockroaches are cannibals....perhaps it is socially acceptible for them to do that but for us human, it's insanity.
