You could try measring out his food and feeding him more often, but smaller meals, so that his total intake is what is should be for his ideal weight. You could also try new toys or playing with him with a string or rope for a period of time each day.

We put our cat on a diet, she eats only r/d or w/d food. And you get that the vet's office. It worked for her and she lost alot of weight.
