My automatic camera.

I have got a film slr camera. I use to really love it (most times anyways) before I started the New York Insistute of Photography. It's a good camera but it's not manual nor does it have manual override on most things. I can manual override the focus and that's about it. It's so frustrating sometimes because I have this image in my head but can't get my camera to take that shot. {Like recently I was taking so pictures of the beautiful cresent moon early one evening at dusk. I used a tripod of course but it still didn't get a sharp image. It still looks neat - but it's not what I was going for.} The thing is though until recently I didn't want a digital. Why? I wanted something good that costed $5K. Of course I sure don't have that kind of money. I found a great digital recently that was only $900 (10.1 megapixel slr) - still a bit too much for me to just go out and buy esp with me trying to save money for adoption and remodeling. But at the same time I waste a lot of money on film bracketing and hoping that I get the perfect shot - and because of my cameras limitations I don't always get it. It's very frustrating....Does anyone out there have this problem? I've got a Minolta Maxxum 3 - any tips?

How about going for less megapixels? Then you can get something very nice for $600 or less, like 5 megapixels. Or try those in between cameras... with a lot of manual features, but you can't change the lenses like SLRs.

I guess the question to ask yourself would be... how large are the prints you want to make? If you are only making prints about 16x20 and below, 5 megapixels will suit you just fine. Even larger than that actually. The thing is, a lot of cameras have a lot of megapixels, with no quality to the megapixels. I had a great 2 megapixel camera that easily printed nice 4x6s, nice 5x7s, and 8x10s that were pretty decent (better than my parent's wedding pictures). But it was a Nikon camera. And back in it's day, it cost $700. When other cameras came out that were 5 megapixels, I stuck with my camera because the quality of those 5 megapixels on the cameras I could afford was absolutely horrible. The way one of my photographer friends puts it is... if you aren't going to print a billboard or some huge poster, you don't need 10 megapixels. And if you can't afford 10 megapixels and you get them anyway, what good is a camera going to be that shoots at 10 megapixels but has a plastic lens or something? On the other hand, having 10 megapixels can be useful for stock photography sometimes. I'm still leaning towards the Nikon D80, but not for the megapixels. If the D50 or D70 were still out, I'd go for that. The D40 just doesn't impress me. I am kind of sad that I missed out on the D70 and D50, so now I have to spend more and get the D80. I don't want a used camera.

Thank you! That was extremely helpful. I guess a smaller pixel size won't be that much worse. I may have missed my chance on one to though. Hopefully the 8 mega pixel will stay around a little longer. I wouldn't want anything but an SLR though. I love them. I was so excited to get the one I got cause of that reason. I know what you mean too about buying a used camera. I might would get an older film camera but nothing to use all the time.

I really like changing my lenses. I love close up shots and taking pics from far away. I love that part of my camera. I'm really worried about print quality with less pixels. I've seen some pics that looked great on the computer but like crap when they were printed.

Even cheap digital cameras have manual control so maybe you should look at getting one of them? Of course you won’t have the same control you would have with an DSLR. I’m currently saving for a Canon EOS 350D, not to expensive and seems to be worth every penny.

Its not what's in your head its what you see, remember that. Your in the process of developing your eye. Like drawing you draw what you see and after awhile your drawings improve. Your limitation isn't your camera it's you. I'll give an example, you can take great pictures with a pin hole camera. Very limited but you can take great phots. Take photos, lots of photos I know they tell you that all ready. You will capture what you want to get. Don't worry about the shot, just take it. If you think it's your camera, just buy another film camera. But from you comments I don't think so. If you need a good digital and film camera a Canon Digital Rebel it would be best but you need to save alot of money to get it. And when you do you will have the same problem, just let go relax and take photots they all won't be perfect. Photography is expensive-I know been there still doing that.

Canon Rebel - Canon Rebel XTi SLR Digital Camera w/EF-S
No it's my camera. I've got a great eye. I take great photos...trust me. It's just in these certian cirmcumstances my camera doesn't do what I'd like it to do. I already said that I bracket...a lot...it's just my camera will not let me control f-stops, aperture and so forth to get the affect I desiree. I have very limited control on what I can do with it. This is the camera I want: Canon Rebel XTi SLR Digital Camera w/EF-S. I checked out some reviews on it. Like you said...just got to save the money...

You did sound frustrated by your comments, there no such thing as a perfect photo. You can't afford a digital one right now just go to B&H Camera and look for another cheap camera-not too cheap. I bet you can find a body $50-100. If you are in NYC go to the store find one. Check out ebay,

Don't live in NYC and I don't want to waste money on another camera. I've dealt with this one this long - I'll just hold out. But thanks for the help.

Buy a Canon Powershot Digital Camera and you will not need to worry about any of the stuff. And if you can afford it then go for a EOS 400D, thats probably the best Starter SLR Camera out there today. As far as light situations are concerned you need to understand the concept of Aperture Control and Shutter Speed. Perhaps a good book on the same will haelp.

See that's the thing. I don't want to buy one until I can get the one I want. That's why I don't own a digital now. Here's the one I want: Canon Rebel XTi SLR Digital Camera w/EF-S. I'm also learning about aperture and shutter speed through The New York Insitute of Photograpy - but my current camera will not let me control them.
