Cats and window blinds

We have vinyl window blinds on all of our windows. I really like the blinds, they add color (we have blue, burgundy, etc.) and I can open them to let light in. Problem is, the cats like to pull the blinds back so they can sit next to the window and look out. After awhile of them doing that, it breaks the slats. I've seen the faux wood blinds and wonder if they would hold up any better? They only come in white, cream color and wood look though. The aluminum blinds are pretty expensive. I'm looking for some suggestions here. For those of you that have cats, what do you have for window treatments?

We have broken blinds. Some of the windows we just gave up on and have curtains. OUr front window we have an all in one blind that rolls down. We keep it up so far to let them in for it. My mother has the horizontal blinds (the ones that open side to side) and her cat doesn't bother them since those just push out of the way. It's just the ones that open up and down that cause problems. What I'd love to get are the new Pella windows they have been advertizing. The ones with the blinds that go between the window panes. That way no one can break them up. Of course that is very expensive and we just don't have the money for it.

Those much be strong cats, lol. We had one cat that would push the blinds from the dining room windows (only windows with them) but she did it so gingerly from the chair next to the window. She pulled them back carefully then even more carefully stepped onto the sill. She was a flake and scared of everything. We had shades in the other windows that were kept rolled up and vertical blinds in the living room that caused them no trouble. Maybe you could just keep them up slightly at the bottom so the cats have access to their favorite sills.

My big fur ball, Hobbes - pic taken in our home of Hobbes
We have vinyl blinds and cats. What I would suggest is: if they are just moving them so they can sit in the window sill I would raise them enough so they won't need to bother the blinds to sit there. If you want more privacy there are valances you can buy to put at the bottom of your window. The cats can't do much to them. You use a spring loaded rod, so you can put it anywhere.

I just pull the blinds up so that there is a small space for the cat to sit in the bottom of the window. We have had this problem before and this is how I solved it.

Cats run the roost. I haven't put our blinds down yet. I am not sure how Itty will react. She does like to sit at the kitchen table and look out at the birds in the feeders. Benta does not bother too much. If you put the blinds up partially so they can look out they may not bother them.

Had the same problem with my cats lol. I started just pulling and leaving them up a few inches so he just had to duck his head underneath the bottom of it.

how about substituting it with curtains? on a side note, if your walls go well with the wood blinds, it doesn't hurt to try it out yea. :)

We've had curtains in the past. They had way too much fun racing up and down them! Thanks for the idea though.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My cats have completely destroyed my mom's window blinds. We have just had to resort to not having any at all. Sorry I can't offer any advice. They just don't make blinds strong enough to keep the kitties from breaking them.

Grrrr...my cat does this too. My mom has wood blinds and her cat does not do it, but I can't afford to put them in right now as they are quite expensive. I have tried keeping mine up enough for her to under them, but I don't like the blinds open at night.

Yes, that's my dilemma too - I don't want to leave the blinds up at night. Good to know on the wood blinds. Thanks for sharing.

Faux wood blinds are pretty sturdy. We put them all over our last house, and the cats never touched them. Ours were white, but like in the living room where burgundy was an accent color, I had burgundy tapes run through the blinds. You can do that at online places. I also put valances on top of some of the windows to add color. Our new home has Pella windows with blinds between the glass, and that's the way to go when you can in my estimation. It's taken us all our lives to get them, but they are nice and stay clean, and kitties can't get anywhere near them.

Good idea on the tapes! I have valances too. It does add extra color. The Pella windows sound pretty nice! Thanks for sharing.

I was going to recommend the wooden ones because that is what I have my dog was doing the same thing ripping them right dogs the middle I think I was buying a blind every week so I got the wooden ones at lowe's they are costy but I haven't had to replace any yet he has a bite mark in one but you can't really notice it unless you are really looking close.Yes you are right I could only get cream or white. I have cream in all the bedroom and white in the livingroom I do have to tell you no matter if you get cream the light still comes though bad.

Indoor cats usually have a favorite window to look out of...so why not let that window be his/hers leave the blinds open enough he/she can look out, and you can close the rest.

I have cats too and what I do is just raise them so the cats can be in the window. They used to paw at them and try and chew on them. I didn't want to have to buy new ones so raising them works for me.
