Yahoo Messenger... Is anybody else having problems?

I downloaded the latest Yahoo Messenger some while ago, 8.5 version, and one night it cut out on me, and I couldn't get it back. Lots of others were having problems too and whatever they did, they couldn't get it back. So, somebody in Yahoo Answers suggested uninstalling and downloading 7.0 version, which I did, successfully. Then, on signing into that, I updated to 8.1, which was fine, until a few days ago, some strange things were happening.
A friend of mine, whom I knew to be in bed, came online, on two different nights, but it wasn't his Yahoo Messenger box that came up when I clicked on his name.. it was the MSN Live connection with Yahoo. I spoke, and got no reply. So, when I next got to talk to him, I asked him about it, and he said he was certainly in bed and asleep at that time... every time, it's around 2-2.30 a.m.
Does anybody else have this problem or do you think we might be being targeted by somebody for some reason? It happened again tonight. He suddenly became visible from invis and when I asked him, he said he was definitely still invis from his end. So, I clicked on his smiley and the MSN Live Connection chat box came up. I spoke, whilst he was there, and received no answer... then, suddenly, about 5-10 minutes later, he disappeared from his Yahoo box.
Can anybody throw any light on this?

Thank you Deeky. Yes, his froze up last night, not mine, but I'm connected, in Yahoo, to his MSN Messenger, or I was, till I unconnected last night.
However... he told me that his screen froze up... he waited 5 minutes, then closed down. (He is only four and a half miles away, btw). Meantime, he was still showing as online and I had to sign out of Yahoo and back in, before he showed off. I don't understand it at all. Yahoo are less than helpful, too. :-(

Darkwin make sure that both of you have added each other to the MSN Live Messenger as that could be the Problem if you or he has only added you or you him then that could be the Problem so see that you have both got MSN Live in the Yahoo if you have then run
you Virus scan and that

Thank you, Gabs. I'll try that. There was no problem with the box coming up... in fact, I got the problem that I was chatting with him, whilst he was showing invis, and suddenly his smiley lit up. I mentioned this to him and he said, "No, I'm still showing invis this end", so, I typed a message in the box, but received no reply. I just don't know. His account has been interfered with from time to time, but it remains a mystery.
However, I will try what you say. Thank you.

I use yahoo and have seen a friend show up online, when they say they are not there. I do know yahoo is very prone to virus problmes. I just run my adaware and norton and spybot to clear up problems. I have actually had to reinstall internet explorer to fix a yahoo login problem.

Thank you for your response GKnott. I have my security and scanners on all the time, but never had any warning, so I'm baffled as to what the cause is. We've had odd messages from time to time, as well, from somebody we don't know, midst our chatting, and on checking, they are not even registered users, so I'm a bit concerned. :-(

I dont seem to have any problems since I last responded to your discussion, but then again my Brother has been off his computer for a couple of weeks and hopes to have a different supplier soon for his broadband so once he is up and running we will soon know.

Yes, that particular messenger was uninstalled and reinstalled and he has a number of lost facilities back, on Yahoo, but still, from time to time, strange things happen. Like, I am just sitting here, and know he's gone to bed some hours before, because he takes a lot of medication, including sleeping aids. Suddenly, his messenger will show him as coming online, when he's fast asleep in bed... usually between 1 a.m. and 3.30 a.m.
Maybe somebody has a like account name, and Yahoo crosses the accounts. I don't know, but it sure is puzzling.
