How can I promote my site at little cost?

United States
December 12, 2006 5:35pm CST
My site has been up and running for a few months, but I get little response. I'm so eager to work!!! I had my own business for about 10 years then left it when my husband took a foreign assignment in Spain (and, of course, there was no way I could also get permission to work during that time). I do proofreading for people who speak English as a Second Language (and I have about 15 years of experience as a teacher). I know that I could advertise in international business magazines, but that's so expensive (and I'm not desperate to earn money, just desperate to work). Anyone have any suggestion? I'd greatly appreciate them. Oh, you can check out my site if you like: www.eslproofreader.com

Try several of the different job boards on the net, most of them are free and you can also use some of the older methods such as link swapping to help build your page rank in the search engines. There are many ways depending on how much you want to spend. Whats your budget you have set aside for promoting your site?

You can try posting in forums or you can write articles and submit them to articles directories

I'd never heard of link swapping, so thanks. I keep my budget pretty low, as I'd like to have work, but don't really need it. If I really needed it, I'd feel justified in spending a bundle to get it rolling. Fact is, I just WANT to work.

You could add your site and link to all your outgoing mail...that is one way...also try to get it out with flyers...and perhaps make some business cards as well.....

You are all so helpful. I've got pamphlets, business cards, etc., but I need to market abroad (Japan, Mexico, Germany, South Korea, etc). I'm so grateful to you all for your interest in my situation.

Or maybe visitors think I charge a little bit more than other sites, which is true. However, I do a very thorough job editing and practically provide a book on the grammatical errors. Problem is, only those who've taken the chance and used me before know that.

Actually, there is a huge market for proofreading, especially for people who speak English as a Second Language; I did it locally for many years but wanted to expand to a global market (and hopefully get enough work to hire maybe 20-30 other proofreaders). I'd like to thank everyone for their very helpful suggestions in this discussion. Regarding starting your own site, I'm no expert. I can only tell you what I did: I contacted MSN web hosting. They did a domain search, provided hosting, and designed the site (up to 8 pages, I supplied the content, they worked up the design). Good luck starting your own. What do you hope to do with your site?

I'm a little biased but I think my site www.AddAnImage.com is a great way to promote your site. It's easy and free. You just need a URL to a picture on your site and that's it!

as you are a teacher you can write articles too and that's a good way to attract traffics to your website. I will send an article (right now I am to search that in my back-up cds) that's an authentic answer to your this particular question. Thank you for your discussion! All the best to you and your business!

Try search engine optimization (SEO). But be careful because there are scam that promise you to index your site in a week or so, but it does not happen. Also try linking your site to blog and other website. All you need to do is respond to the blog add a little content then put your website link. It's worth a try.

I think the best way to promote is to go for the forums there you will get a lot of friends to help you in a lot of ways. Go join a forum of similar interests. There you will find people with whom you can exchange information also.
