Apples, known as a cleansing food, contain fiber, antioxidants and fruit flavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids contained in apples is quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory as well as anti-cancer actions. Apples contain vitamin C as well – more so in green apples than in red ones. Apples can reduce blood cholesterol levels, counter constipation and diarrhea, help joint problems and help prevent diseases in general. How much apples should you eat? Apples can be eaten freely, but more than two or three a day does not increase the health benefits. Large quantities of apple juice can encourage tooth decay and diarrhea. Maximizing the benefits of apples Apples are best eaten raw, as cooking them can reduce the flavonoids by as much as 70 percent into the cooking water. It is also a good idea to eat the apple unpeeled as flavonoids are contained in or near the skin.

Apple is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. There are more then 7,500 cultivers of Apple. Apples do not flower in tropical environment but they need chilly environment. 45 million tones of apples are grown yearly all across the world. An old proverb attests the benefit of the fruit "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Research suggests that apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Like many other fruits apples contain Vitamin C as well as a host of other antioxidant compounds, benefitial for human beings. The fibre content, which is less in other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements and also reduce the risk of colon cancer. In addition to these, there are hundreds of other advantages and benefits as well.

Some Health Benefits of Apple for your information: An old proverb attests to the health benefits of the fruit: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Research [4] suggests that apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Like many fruits, Apples contain Vitamin C as well as a host of other antioxidant compounds, which may reduce the risk of cancer by preventing DNA damage. The fibre content, while less than in most other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements and may thus reduce the risk of colon cancer. They may also help with heart disease, weight loss and controlling cholesterol, as they do not have any cholesterol, have fibre (which reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption), and are bulky for their caloric content like most fruits and vegetables. A group of chemicals in apples could protect the brain from the type of damage that triggers such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer's and Parkinsonism. Chang Y. "Cy" Lee of the Cornell University found that the apple phenolics, which are naturally occurring antioxidants found in fresh apples, can protect nerve cells from neurotoxicity induced by oxidative stress. The researchers used red delicious apples from New York State to provide the extracts to study the effects of phytochemicals. Lee said that all apples are high in the critical phytonutrients and that the amount of phenolic compounds in the apple flesh and in the skin vary from year to year, season to season and from growing region to growing region (November/December 2004 issue of the Journal of Food Science). The predominant phenolic phytochemicals in apples are quercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B2 (PMID 14558772). The seeds are mildly poisonous, containing a small amount of amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside, but a large amount would need to be chewed to have any toxic effect [1]. Pesticide contamination is linked to an increasing number of diseases, and they are mostly found on the outside of fruits and vegetables. Washing or peeling before eating may reduce pesticide intake[2] but peeling will also reduce the intake of the beneficial nutrients.

Apple trees were grown and prized for their fruit by the people of ancient Rome. It is believed that the Romans took cultivated apples with them into England when they conquered the country. Apple-growing became common in England and many other parts of Europe Both the seeds of apples and the trees themselves were brought to America from England, probably in 1629. John Endicott, one of the early governors of Massachusetts Bay Colony, is said to have brough the first trees to America. The cultivated varieties of apples gradually spread westward from the Atlantic coast. Native Americans took seeds of these apples into the wilderness and planted them in their villages. A white man, John Chapman, also helped to spread apple growing in the U.S. He carried apple seeds with him wherever he went, and planted them in thinly settled parts of the country. For this reason he became known as "Johnny Appleseed." As time passed, American applegrowers developed many new and improved varieties of apples. Today the U.S. is the principal apple-producing country in the world.

I am pregnant and make sure to eat a green apple every day. (Red are not tasty to me). I feel very good to be getting nutrients into the growing baby, and my 3 year old son shares it with me. If he had his way he'd sit there and eat his own apple, but then that toooo much fresh fruit for him at this age. Anyway, apples are so good for you and a must to everyones daily diet in my opinion.

Ok, but what about if yu consume the appes that were picked months ago? Are they still so good and healthy? In my country we pick apples in October and they sell it all year around. But if you consume an apple in April for example it is still so healthy and fresh? What do you think?

Yes, I fully agree. Apple is the type of fruit, that can provide most nutrients and minerals. Also, for good memory development, it is well advised like banana for children. And for all, serving an apple daily, says good-bye to doctors from family. Thanks.
