to be really frank with you , i dont think you need to worry , NEWS is like a plural form of NEW . So its a collection of all the NEW happenings . Here my explanation stays withing english also heard somewhere that itz the short form of "NORTH EAST WEST SOUTH".. donno whether itz true or not..
