Is it really safe to work outside your country?

What I most like to do with life, is to be able to go to other places or visit foreign lands such as USA or European countries.However, with stories of my countrymen being harmed while working abroad made me hesitate to go out...Am I right in my feelings? Please help me out, I really would like to understand why is it so hard to be working in the other countries...
