Discussion about the common practice of leaving a waiter or waitress a tip. Why is the tip left? How much should be left? When should you not leave a tip?

I always tip based on service. If I get good service, I tip as much as 50%. However, if I have a waitress who doesn't acknowledge us except when she brings us our bill, I don't leave one.

I leave a Tip based on the service recieved. if the service is poor I will leave a small tip, if the Service is good I leave a decient tip. if the service is outstanding then I leave an outstanding tip, along with a penny which I was told to mean there is nothing the waitress could do to improve and to keep it up. If the service is crapy but the food is good. I will then ask to see the chef and give the tip to him.
