Friendship vs Loveship

I have a friend who expressed his love to me. I treated him as my good friend but now he turned out and showed he is also a male. I am unable to talk to him and afraid of him what he may do himself or to me. He is good, caring, kind but I don't understand why he turned to love which I don't like that term bringing between friendship. Infact, parents are looking alliance for me. How to convince my friend to be a friend. I need his friendship. If not possible is it wise to leave him leaving friendship.
