A good friend of mine is a school bus driver and the kids drive her nuts with getting up and moving arround all the time. I think if there were seatbelts on the bus then the kids would have to wear them and stay in there seats what is your view on this. If you give me short answers that have nothing to do with this topic you will get a negative rating. Also if you copy and paste anyones response you will be reported.

Yes school buses should have seat belts. They cram so many kids in one seat that it's completely unsafe, and there is nothing to protect them when the bus gets into an accident. On the news last night was a story about an accident with 4 buses and a car. The kids got hurt mainly because they had no seat belts. They have shown videos of kids getting tossed all over the bus and stuff. Now I don't have kids yet, but I would be uneasy about placing them on a bus without seat belts if I did. Even if the bus didn't have seat belts the kids should stay in their seats. It's unsafe for them to be moving about when the vehicle is moving. Our children need to be safe when going to school.

I saw that report too. I think the reasoning behind no seatbelts is that if the driver needs to get all the kids off the bus and they are small they might not be able to undo the belts. Sounds silly but I can see how they think it is a concern. There was in incident outside of Chicago many years ago where 17 children (teens) were killed when their bus was hit by a train. The bus had stopped at a red light and the driver did not know the rear end was still on the tracks. The kids didn't even have time to get off the bus but can you imagine if they had been little and freaked out and didn't know how to undo the belts? I do think they should have belts, though. My daughter is 6 and rides the bus and I have had to tell her to stay seated until the bus stops because they will all be standing right behind the driver when she pulls up. She always looks so frazzled. I don't know how she does it and their route isn't that long. It is a small town so she has like 25 kids on her bus for the most part.

It's always struck me as odd that they wouldn't have seatbelts in school buses. In Ontario where I live seatbelts are mandatory for drivers and passengers in cars and trucks. The public transit doesn't have them, which is understandable as people are constantly getting on and off. I don't understand why a bus full of school kids wouldn't require them. Not only would it help the driver have better control, but it could save lives in the event of an accident. Especially if the kids are walking around on the bus, that's just plain wrong in a moving vehicle.

That is exactily what we are saying. It is not safe at all and yet people wonder why busdrivers have to scream at the kids all the time. No seatbelts is just 1 reason why I dont let my kids ride the bus. I drive them my self and I pick them up that way i know they are in a seatbelt and are safe.

I have often wondered why it is illegal to travel in a car or truck without wearing a seat belt yet our children are not required to wear them on a bus. It does not make any sense. I understand the seats are padded and that is supposed to prevent injury but if the bus ended up on it's side the kids would be in a pile on the windows. Wearing seatbelts would also prevent some of the horseplay that is so distracting to the drivers. Even if they are staying in their seats they are usually standing up and jumping around.

That is my exact point. We are told by law to wear our seatbelts or we get a ticket yet the school bus kids dont have to. That is wrong and very unsafe for ourkids. That is another reason I drive my kids to school and pick them up every day.

To me this was a no-brainer from the beginning. As soon as seat belts were required in cars, the same should have been required in a school bus. How can it be any other way? Is it no big deal if children get thrown around in a bus during an accident. I remember the back of the seat in front of me being pretty hard. Even if these seats are now padded, it still does not give any control of the child during the accident.

I think it's a really good idea. Buses do get into accidents occasionally. It would ensure the safety of the kids if they were belted into their seats. It would also reduce the amount of horsing around and decrease distractions for the driver - who really should be paying attention to the road and not trying to control the behaviour of 30+ kids.

Over all it would be much safer for everyone if there were seatbelts on busses. I just dont understand why they have not thought of it.

Yes and what if your child is on the bus and the bus gets into an accident and your child gets hurt because there was NOT a seatbelt to keep them in there seat. Think about that.

I believe that all moving vehicles on the roadways should have seat belts, and buses should be no exception. Buses carry our children, our precious cargo, and should be able to protect them 100%. I can imagine what you friend is saying, as buses can get crazy with all the students. I think that keeping them in their seats would require seatbelts no doubt.

I have always wondered why buses never used seatbelts. You would think it be more safer for the bus driver and the kids. What if a bus flipped over or something? Kids would go flying all around. That is a scary thought. I think seatbealts on a bus should be a law. I really don't understand why after all these years there hasn't been a law on seatbelts in school buses or any bus at that. There must be a reason. Now you got me curious on that. I might have to do some research on this. LOL!

My son rides in a full sized school bus with seat belts. Yes, I think all school busses should have seat restraints.

I think they should have seat belts and don't understand why they don't. How can they expect the bus driver to watch all those kids and still drive them home safely. I also understand why they treat them then any other vehicle, when wearing a seat belt is the law.

I agree wholeheartedly! Buses of any size need seat belts. Police give tickets to us if we do not belt our child into our cars (we know how we drive). BUT, give our children over to bus drivers who use cell phones, speed, do U turns, run off the side of the road and we don't require seat belts? Does this make any sense? Not to me! My children are precious to me and any safety device that will keep them that way when I am not around to make sure they are safe needs to be implemented. So many deaths could have been saved and will be saved if this is made mandatory on all school buses.

i more than agree with you on haveing seat belts on the bus. i work for a bus company that is recently in the newspaper. not only do i think that they should have seat belts but they should also have monitors on the buses at all the time. to prevent a recoarnation on what just happened.

The reason school buses don't have seat belts is because it would be a safety issue. My Dad owned a large school bus line in Canada for many years. Seat belts in bus has been a subject of disscussion for many years. I was determined by safety standards that low lape seat belts , which is the only kind they can istal in buses, would cause more injurys to the child than to be safe. Also if the bus was in a serious accident they could esential be a trap and keep the children trapped in the bus. They have done many tests on this and determined that seat belts in school buses would actually be a safety hassard rather than a safety feature. As for the kids remaining in there seats. I also drove school bus for many years. Sujest to your friend that she pull the bus off the road and park everytime one gets out of there seat. If she does that several times the kids will learn that she means business when she tells them to remain seated and it will soon stop. I have had to do that with teenagers. Once they are all late for work or a date etc they quickly learn to sit and not interfere with the safety on a bus. Good luck and have a merry christmas .

Yes I do believe that if they law states that seatbelts must be worn in other vehicles, then why are we not concered that our childrens safty is less in full size school busses? Do we put our children in the car without a seatbelt? Not likly, so in fact we should all agree that it is safer for our children to wear seatbelts in the full size school busses
