Sometimes I don't. Other times I just close my eyes and jump in.

I read a really good book once called Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway. Can't remember who the author was. I get very nervous in new situations and have the horrible infliction of going red which is a real disability sometimes. However, I have had to combat this and I do throw myself into situations I find uncomfortable because I feel if I didn't I would never reach any of my goals. My advise to anyone who is fearful of things is meet them head on. The fear of doing something is usually worse than the outome. Good luck!!!

I have this same read face infliction. Meditation has helped me calm a lot though in new situations. It is nice to know that I am not the only one with the red face thing. It is nice to meet you.

I think the best way to overcome your fears is to face them. I am very scared of heights but in janurary I had went on the plane and looked out the window and now I am not really that scared anymore, but I am also afraid of Spiders and that I think I can never face! One day hopefully I can!

I agree with you. Even I do the same thing. I was scared of drowning in water, so I never learnt swimming. But a few years ago, I decided to learn swimming and now, I swim pretty well and I love it.

Eww how would you face your fear of spiders? Ick ick ick! Would you let a pet store tarantula climb your arm? Someone put one on me once...and I sent it flying. I think I'll always be afraid of spiders.

Fear is a natural reaction to danger or the threat of injury. If suddenly confronted with a huge dangerous animal, most everyone will turn and run. Likewise, if you are given a choice of doing something you perceive as harmful, you will usually avoid the danger. The problem occurs when the danger is not real or the fears are not rational. You can overcome irrational fears by confronting them in a safe--but yet scary--environment. Small successes over danger can build up your confidence and bravery. Sometimes you can also do this by following the example of others.

I'm one of those impulsive people who just jumps straight on in. I have a tattoo on my right arm written in beautiful chinese script which says "accomplish everything without fear." So I look at that and i'm not scared, because there's nothing to be scared of - it's all in my mind!

I am not sure if you can overcome emetophobia. Even those who do not have this phobia don't want to be around anyone who is sick (unless they work in the medical field and are just desensitized to it) but I think if someone puked on me I would go mad!! I am still waiting for some emetophobic who truely said that he or she was cured and I would like to know how.

Oh that's gross. I'm afraid of people getting blood on me... or sweat but I'm probably more of a germaphobe than what you are talking about. But I don't relish the thought of getting thrown up on.

It just depends. Sometimes doing things even when you are afraid will help you to become less afraid the next time. Sometimes ignoring the feelings of fear will help.

There are many valid techniques for dealing with fear. First, there is facing it. If you face your fear though, you must not just suppress the fear. Often when we do something we are scared of we just swallow the fears deep down. Then they don't away they just cause us problems in a way we don't notice. Then you can do some self cognitive work. You can close your eyes and inquire as to what exactly you fear. And, why do you fear it. Then you find the counter facts. Often fear is simply based on a lie, so you ask yourself what is the truth. Example, you fear spiders, you know that spiders can hurt you, but only some can kill you. And, many spiders will not hurt you so the danger is not universal. So, why fear all spiders? Why not educate yourself on what spiders are dangerous and simply avoid those. Also you might think, why fear spiders at all? If I can avoid a spider then why be scared of it? If I can not avoid a spider than I doomed, and if there is nothing I can do then my fear is useless. But, the truth is that there is almost always something you can do to help make sure you do not get hurt by a spider, so why be scared? There is also the combined method of facing your fear head on and cognitively facing the reality of the situation. You face your fear, while keeping the truth that there is no reason to be scared in mind. And, you use the experience of facing your fear to further support the idea that there is nothing to fear. In Rinzai Zen fear is overcome by the contemplation of Koans. When the truth of reality is experienced through the contemplation of Koans you suddenly realize there is nothing to fear. Or at least that is how I understand it. But you can check out this one for clearer understanding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinzai There is also contemplation of the nature of fear itself. Then when you fully understand fear, in theory you could overcome it. I tend to use a combination of all of these methods including the Koans with Zen. I find meditation to be very helpful when dealing with fears. I will often use my experience with meditation to help me relax before an interview. From a more relaxed state it is easier to observe myself while I am scared, thus leading to an understanding of fear, and eventually possibly to conquer it.
