Starting up is hard to do!

I am working as hard and as fast as I can learning about the ingredients and recipes for making my own bath and body items. Who knows...I might get pretty good at facial skin care products too. I am amazed at the information that is available online. The trade magazines that tell about the ingredients in each line of the most popular brands of skin care are quite the eye opener. I will never look at an ingredients label the same way again. I ordered some unrefined shea butter and already have some beeswax and virgin coconut oil in house...just need a couple more items and some germ surpressing agents and I'm all set. Has anyone else out there explored making their own skin care products? How did you get started? Was it expensive?

I made some lip balms just before Xmas using a kit that I bought from a company in Scotland, but now I know what the ingredients are I am starting to source them myself with a view to making them from scratch. With the kit form I think they cost about 60p per tube to make, and could be sold (on eBay for instance) for about £1.50. The main attraction of this is, as you say, that you know exactly what you are putting on your skin. The ingredients of some over the counter stuff these days can be horrific! The list of chemicals outnumbers the list of anything even vaguely natural, and a lot of these chemicals haven't been around for long enough for anyone to say what the long-term effects may be. I wish you good luck in your venture.

Not sure I understand your point. Why do you say "what do I think these natural things are if not more chemicals?" What I mean is, if I want to use, say, rosemary oil, I have the choice between genuine 100% actual rosemary oil, distilled from grown rosemary plants. Or I can get something that smells like rosemary oil but has in fact never been near a rosemary plant in its life, has been created completely artificially and is all synthetic.

I haven't looked into it but I am allergic to everything out there. It is so bad that I am even allergic to tap water. How do you get started, I would love to look into it and see if I can't get something that I am not going to react to.

I have never made any natural beauty products, but I know someone that makes them and use them in her massage business. I think she use oatmeal, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter etc. She only does it small scale, and she said it is not very expensive.

this topic is very much an eye-opener for me. having my own make-up line (such as lip glosses and balms, cheek tints, and eye color) has crossed my mind often. you just inspired me to pursue it. i won't really do it as a serious business but just as a fun and profitable hobby. maybe i will just sell it to my friends. i know it's difficult especially when you're just starting on something but what's important is you act and do something. you can start small if your resources are limited. eventually it will grow if you keep your heart into it. sorry i cannot contribute much with regards to experience on making skin care products. i suggest that you seek a mentor who has done what you've been planning. maybe you can find one here or in other online forums. i'm sure there are at least one out there who is very much willing to give you an expert advice. i just wanna say thank you for bringing up this topic. and i wish you luck and success in your venture.

I haven't but my grandmother has. She said that in the long run it was worth it. She would make enough for the family and would also sale it to her friends and our extended family. I think that it is good that you found a hobby that you enjoy. Good luck.

I've never tried making my own. I don't use much anyway. How is it going? Are you well on your way now? Have you gotten the mineral makeup down pat yet? I wish you loads of success!
