Why did the designer of the titanic boldly say that it was the safest ship ever?

It was probably the safest ship of its time, but the accident with the ice burg happened so fast and they didnt get the water tight doors down quick enough that all they did was slow the sinking down a little.

Titanic was one of the safest ships of its day. It exceeded the then current safety standards and had more lifeboats than required by safety regulations. Titanic's designer never said the ship was unsinkable -- the press created that.
