Death toll on roads during December holidays

Hundreds of people die in car accidents on our country's national roads every year during this time. Last night I drove 500 kms in pouring rain with very bad view of the road and on a very busy highway. I'm just thinking for a moment of all the people who do not make it to their destinations safe... Does this happen in you country too?
