Are you superstitious?

I got a set of pearl bracelet and necklace from a friend. This other friend tells me that pearls bring bad luck if given; if you want pearls you should buy it yourself. What do you say to that? I stil have the pearls, though. I don't want to just throw it away, but then again, I have to think twice before giving it to a friend. Do you believe in superstitions?
