Why does chopping an onion bring out tears?

This ones been on my mind for quite sometime so I thought maybe someone on Mylot knows the answer.

I dont know, but when I chop onions, I do open my mouth and try not to breathe in my nose, that seems to help

Youd think this is funny but I sometimes put my swimming goggles on to chop onions..he he..

onions contain sulfur. and sulfur basically when it gets into our eyes, it makes us cry. the sulfur in onions are in the form of gas. whenever we slice the onions, the sulfur gas is release. and this gas gets into our eyes making tears flow.
