What's better for you....person or voice mail?

I have started a job as a receptionist and am often told to put someone to a voice mail, but when I tell the caller that I am forwarding them to voice mail, they seem to get upset asking, "can't you just take a message?" I feel their grief, as I am not fond of speaking to machines either. What do you think?

Some people actually don't like PEOPLE! They think it takes too long, they don't want to give their credit card information to an actual person for fear of theft, They just want to leave a message, not actually have a conversation. Amazing, huh? Well, it takes all kinds, but I am like you. Don't like them at all! Thanks for your post.

Most people that I know have a problem talking to an automated answerphone system, which is a reluctance that I have never truly understood. At work it is common to encounter an answerphone message when trying to ring an internal number, but I have never heard any of my colleagues leave a message Instead they either leave it for a while and try again or email the person concerned. I seem to be the only member of staff who is comfortable speaking to a machine. Despite this, I must confess that I hate the automated answerphone systems used by call centres because you seem to be unable to make any progress whatsoever. Maybe this is the scenario that has created a phobia over the years.

I cannot stand them either!! It is a complete frustration when you have a simple question and they want to redirect you to 5 different departments that have nothing at all to do with what you want to ask. So then you just push a number to go to ANYONE, but you just get more choices of numbers to push......UUUUURRRGGGG!!! So, in short........ME TOO!! Thanks for your response.

as a receptionist its your job to take the messages and the caller will sure be upset when you will told them that you are forwarding to voicemail, its very obsulate way of taking messages but you are present and can take a messages then why are they asking you to forward all calls, maybe they dont need you there..
