I have been accusesed by some of being a pet collector... I have 1 dog, 1 Munchkin Cat, 1 Macaw, 2 ferrets, amd Hermit Crabs. I love them all dearly.. So can someone tell me what exactly constitutes a "Pet Collector"

Hoarder is a term for people who collect animals and can't or wont take care of them, it is a psychological disorder and is classified as animal abuse. If they are being cared for psychologically/physically/medically and not neglected, then you are not a hoarder.

Thats what I say too. I think mainly people don't think before they speak. They just throw out harsh comments and don't even give any thought. I take good care of all my animals. I just really enjoy them and would never neglect or abuse them. Thanks for your response.

I think a horder or pet collector would 1-have many multiples of the same type of animal, like the lady recently in Maryland who had ver 70 horses. And 2-often doesn't realize the sad and neglected state of health the animals are in....flea ridden or mites or skin infections....starving, etc. Do you provide regular veterinary care for your animals? Are you breeding irresponsibly or are they properly spayed and neutered? Are they well feed and groomed? If you answer these questions honestly and in a positive way than you are an ANIMAL LOVER (as am I) and not a horder or anything to be ashamed of. :-) Just my two cents having seen the situation in a bad way more than once.

All are happy healthy and well cared for. I think it's because throughout my family close and distant, I have more than just the usual cat, dog pet. I previously had a snake, sugar gliders..and most of them think it is strange to have ferrets. Maybe it's my family that's strange and not me......hmmmm

No not really. I have two dogs and some fish. I won't get any more than that as I want to be able to give time to all of them and not spread myself thin.

That's a really good attitude. I am home all day on disability so I have plenty of time for all. My Macaw spends several hours a day out of her cage of course that all depends on her behavior. She knows if she gets too loud and obnoxious she is going in the cage for time out.

My family has 4 cats, 2 dogs, 2 birds, and an iguana! At one time my parents were breeders and we had about 20 different kinds of birds. I don't know that you would call us "collectors", just animal lovers! Neither of my parents were really allowed to have pets when they were kids, so they have always let us have several. They are all well taken care of :-)

First of all I don't like that phrase, "pet collector". That reminds me of someone who doesn't care for animals or their welfare and just keeps getting pets to have more. I think if you love your pets, take good care of them (both physically and emotionally) and provide proper vet care you shouldn't be considered a pet collector. And I know you didn't mean it in that way at all, so please don't be offended. I have several pets here too, dogs, parrots, and my daughters both have a dog, a cat and turtles.

Hi, I don't like the phrase myself. That's my problem. I have alot of pets so what. A couple of my relatives and a friend have said I am a pet collector and don't know why that offends me. Well I may collect different pets but I care for and love all of them. When they say it I am offended because they don't know what I do with my pets, they just know of them.

Yes I have 12 hermit crabs right now. They can live for a very long time in captivity. The problem is people don't know about the requirements. They need proper heat, humidity, water and food.
