I dont know. I shake hand when I meet someone for first time. I dont shake their hand when I say goodbye. My hubby, he and his friends shake their hands, when they see each other, and when they say goodbye. I asked him why and he said that just the way him and all other do very first time they met and it became their tradition. I think we all do it to be polite.

Generally women folks in India greet people with NAMASTHE by folding their hands. They do not shake hands. Of course men (including youth) shake hands while welcoming a person and again shake hands to say goodbye. Muslims and some people in north India, they hug each other to greet. The reason behind shaking hands could be as follows: 1. In olden days, Hands are used to fight, shoot, to kill 2. When these people want friendship they lower their hands and extend to shake others' hands signalling friendship and not fighting.
