I was diagnosed with (MVP) Mitral Valve Prolapse a year ago, where the flaps of the valves which suppose to open and close in a normal rhythmic way to allow blood to flow in one way is not functioning it's normal job. The valve does not close normally and have back leaks on the blood flow. Although many suffers from MVP have lived a normal life, mine could have been that too but I had an acquired Asthma due to the medication given to me for MVP chest pain. It was a beta blocker prescribed for MVP chest pains. After taking that for 2 months I noticed I have wheezing coughs or difficulty in breathing. In short I have consulted a Pulmonologist and the test shows I have asthma. From research I have found out that Beta blockers are asthma triggers and the doctor agrees with it. Now I have acquired asthma. Have you experienced having an acquired asthma due to a certain drug? or have a health condition that leads to another desease due to drugs prescribed?

This is very interesting. My BF has MVP and he has been taking beta blockers for a few months now. What kind do you take? He is taking Propranolol. Please let me know, thanks! :)

I was taking Metropolol and I stopped it because it's an asthma trigger. When I was advised by my Cadiologist to take betablockers for MVP and my angina or chest pain I don't have asthma and I never had asthma since birth. When I start taking metropolol I noticed I have wheezing coughs that lasted for a month so I consulted a Pulmonologist and was diagnosed of asthma. My mother is an asthmatics but I never had asthma since birth and it only started when I start taking betablockers.

I too have MVP and have had for a number of years. I was on a large dose of bata blocker also. I had to quit taking it. I too have athma. I had it as a baby but out grew it. It came back about 12 years ago. The bata blocker did not cause my athma, it only aggervated it. The athma is already present.
