Driving a car while on a cell phone! What can be more dangerous!!

I am so tired of driving down the street and having to watch out for the idiots talking on cell phones. This past week I even watched police doing it and it happens to be illegal in my state. Dont these people realize how dangerous this is? I know a few who were in accidents and they actually blamed the other driver for being careless. What is so important that they can not at the least pull over for a few seconds and talk. Their life can't be that important that they can not slow down and discuss what ever is being discussed. Yesterday, there was a young woman on the cell and also leaning on the floor of the passengers seat while driving. I pulled over and let her pass because she was driving so bad. I really don't have an answer for this problem. The police have enough to do than to pull over everyone that looks like they are on a phone but something needs to be done. More accidents are happening and people are just not getting the message. What really makes me afraid is when parents have children in their car and they are on the phone. Can you say STUPID and careless?

I agree 100% with you when you say there is not one thing that important that people have to talk no the cell phone and drive. I have had so many near misses of being hit by people talking on the cell phones and not watching the road. They run red lights, so side to side. I won't even call my husband when I know he is on his way home as I don't want him on the phone and driving, and he doesn't either. He always calls me as he is getting in the car at work to see if I need anything on the way home. They even came out with head sets for people to use well driving and I see very few of them being used. I guess they will wake up when they get into a accident and all I can say I hope it isn't me and they don't end up killing someone well on a phone call...

I wonder why some people cannot use hands-free devices if they really want to talk while they drive. In my country, u can get booked and fined when the traffic patrol guys see ur hand taking ur phone to ur ear as u drive.

You are so correct! People wont realize until someone they know or even better, love are mamed or die in an accident with someone on a cell phone. No one takes responsibility for their actions. And their response is, i can talk and drive. I dont know what the big deal is. Thanks for your comment and have a great New Year!

I have read and watched the studies done on the news. No matter what you do on the phone, you are not concentrating on the road. Eyes wander. It is so dangerous. But no one believes this and they will not stop until they hurt themselves or someone. Thanks for commenting.

One shouldn't talk on mobiles while driving, if you have an important call just brake on a side and than talk.

I hate it too. Cell phones are one of my pet peeves. I started this discussion three months ago: "What do you think of people who use their cell phones while driving?" I confess that I do actually have a cell phone, but I hardly ever use it as I find it mostly unnecessary. I don't feel the need to constantly be in contact with everyone I know. Most conversations can wait until I am home. I find people using cell phones everywhere very annoying! Hang it up and pay attention to what is happening around you! Watch out for that kid on the bicycle you almost hit because you were too busy talking or texting on it! Focus on driving if you are operating a vehicle! No time for the cell there! When was the last time you bumped into someone on the sidewalk because either you the other person were distracted by it? How about those morons at the theater or meeting who didn't turn off their cell and thus disrupt everyone else when a call comes in! I find these noisy/ringing devices so very very annoying I just want to destroy them all! Now because man has so embraced these portable transceivers we have all those ugly cell towers dotting the land and destroying the natural beauty of Gods good earth. Telephone poles and power lines are more then enough thanks! I realize I am very much in the minority with this but the more cells have invaded our lives the more I have learned to hate them. News flash. You are not going to die without a cellular phone! Your dependance on it is all in your head. You don't have to always be seconds away from talking to everyone you know. Most people talking on cell phones don't actually have anything really IMPORTANT to say. Everyone thinks that they do but if they knew the truth they might find what they have to say is really only important to them. Not always, but more often then not. Most conversations could actually wait until you can actually tell the person you want to talk to in person. People in the store who can't seem to buy anything before checking with the person who they love. Talk about insecure! Can't remember everything you came to buy? Make an old fashioned list. Probably takes less time then making the call. I can't begin to count the times I have had close encounters with other drivers who instead of focusing on their driving instead are texting or dialing or conversing with someone they could wait till they got home to talk to! How about the folks in the next booth at the restaurant who keep talking louder and louder on their cell because you have to do the same to be heard by the people AT YOUR TABLE?! Then they get all bent because you are interfearing with their phone conversation. *sheeez The Zagat restaurant guide reports that cell phone rudeness is now the number one complaint of diners, and USA Today notes that “fifty-nine percent of people would rather visit the dentist than sit next to someone using a cell phone.” I’ve listened to strangers discuss in excruciating detail their own and others’ embarrassing medical conditions. In the past few years alone, men and women have been stabbed, escorted off of airplanes by federal marshals, pepper-sprayed in movie theaters, ejected from concert halls, and deliberately rammed with cars as a result of their bad behavior on their cell phones. With phones ringing in movies, weddings and classrooms, it's no wonder people want to tone down the intrusion. So what legally can be done to stop annoying cell-phone use? If on the road pull over and stop somewhere before using it. If you are indoors join the smokers outside the building if you need to shout into your phone. Don't be so rude.

And thank you! I get so worked up over these devices. I defiantly have issues to workout about them. Funny thing too, my dad was a ham for years. For those of you who don't know this term it is amateur radio enthusiasts. But that doesn't take to the outdoors very well as the gear was like a desktop PC. So you had to stay at home to do it. But then we had CB radios and walkie talkies. They didn't take over like cells have. The whole situation makes me want to get my hands on one of those cellular phone jammers you can buy in Europe to carry around with me. Everyone in range would find that their cells wouldn't work. But then I guess I will choose not to do that as it is illegal here. I just wish people would pay attention to what is happening right here, right now!

Great POst!! I have a cell too but I am waiting until my contract is up to get rid of it. $50 a month to sit in my pocketbook. I carry it mostly because I want it for safety. If i should break down. But I do forget to bring it too. Your views are so much like mine. It angers me that people are so irresponsible that they think this is ok. I worked at a convienence store a few years ago at night. There was one occasion where a man walked in and was looking right at me and talking. I asked him if I could help and he snapped at me that he was on the phone. He had a ear bud in.I had no clue he was on the phone. Then when he was ready he again got angry because I didnt know it and I was not ready. The only thing that can be done is restaurants should ban cells inside as they do smoking. The same with any establishment that has a large number of people. It is like the smoking ban. It infringes on my rights for you to be talking loudly and constantly on the phone. Ban it!! And they should make it that a car wont start if you are on the phone. Or if you use it the car shuts off. Wouldnt that get them. l0l. Thanks for commenting.

Yes I agree with you. Even I was the victim of rash driving of a cell phone user while driving. He hit my car from back. He refused to acknowledge that was his mistake. There should be some sensor in the car that will divert any incoming calls and no signal for any outgoing calls while the driver is on the wheel. This way we can curb this menace.

Well, the simple solution is, when people are caught, they don't get a small fine, they lose their license for 6 months. If they do it again after that, they lose it for 2 years. Not many people would do it a second time. We just need governments with guts to really get stuck into these idiots. I have to say I'm tired of seeing arrogant, irresponsible, agressive and downright stupid people on the roads. Sad fact is, a large % of the population behaves this way now, and not just in their driving, but many other aspects of their lives (though that is a discussion for elsewhere). Just sit at a bus stop near an intersection and watch how people behave on the roads, how many are using phones, eating, doing their makeup, and so many other stupid behaviours, it is amazing the road toll is as low as it is...

I watch it every day. I dont understand people. They think driving is a right and it IS NOT! It is a privilege. You dont have the right to be stupid in your car. There are thousands of other lives you are putting at risk by doing so. Thanks for posting.

I agree in part with you. It is carelessness especially when you are on the road with others or even worse with children in the car. People need to concentrate on whats in front of them. If they want to harm themselves that is their business but I do not want to be in the area with you when you are on the phone and not seeing me. Thanks for the comment and have a great New year!

I think having a sense of responsibility towards safety of self and others will go along way instead of depending on the police whose primary function now is to collect bribes, and that to in front of their superior officers the police dept to function efficiently should be given on contract
