Potty Training A 3 Year Old

I am trying to potty train my three year old son...I have been actively trying for about 5 months now...he will go for other people and when we go to other's houses and he will go when he first wakes up but I can forget about it during any other time during the day...is there anyone out there that has any suggestions on what I should do about this problem that I am having

I would try setting the kitchen timer for every hour or when he is most likely to need to go,and tell him,when it goes off,he has to at least try to go,I would stay with the cotton underpants and start putting plastic pants on over them,and let him know,that he can stop wearing the plastic pants,when he starts using the potty at all times,and will go back into them after an accident.

There are many causes of this and just as many methods of training,I would suggest you try "potty training" on Ivillage.com,there is a lot of help there.
we would need to know what you are doing to train,and what he is wearing,both at homw and when going out,as well as nap and night.

thank you for the response...well he was wearing underwear during the day and at night we put him in pull ups...he doesn't take a nap...but he would resort to using the restroom in his underwear everytime we put them on him so we have stuck with pull ups...and as far as methods I have tried all that has been suggested...leaving him on the potty for a little while once every hour...letting him tell you when he needs to go and taking him...letting him go on his own...sitting in there reading to him...things like that...tried praising him every time he went tried punishing when he went in his diaper...things of that nature
