why do people say'hi'?

Does it sound more friendly then hello

In my opinion it is more informal than hello. I would say "Hi" to a friend but "hello" to a stranger.

I agree there, my hello's all go to strangers. Although when I go swimming all I ever here is 'Morning!' so I've gotten in the habit of saying Morning! I fear meeting anyone in the afternoon!

i think 'hi' is most most friendly.. rather than 'Hello'. 'Hello' is more more formal than 'hi'.

I usually say 'Hey' to people I know, I've taken it as a personal greeting, like the French. They have "bonjour" and "Salut" the latter usually reserved for people they know.

yes, "hi" is more informal, it is for this reason that we use it with people that we already know
