12 Year Old Girl gets Liposuction

Liposuction seems to be a very common procedure for adults to have, but this is the first I've heard of a child getting it. I've read an article that really moved me. Normally I would've been like: "Plastic surgury for a 12 year old, no way!" But then I took into considerations that diets and exercise don't always work for people either. This article included some very sad quotes from kids who have struggled with their weight: "I'm like the prey. People come after me because I'm fat" is the quote that stuck in my head the most; very sad. I know that liposuction wouldn't always be the solution for every kid, but do you think it's ever acceptable? If so, under what circumstances? If not, why? Would you ever allow it with your own children? If you'd like to read the article I'm talking about, you can find it at the following website: Source: http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=2631490&page=1

I have to disagree with you. There are some children with medical ccnditions that prevent them from being normal sized. What do you tell those kids who do eat right(healthy) and exercise yet they continually gain weight?? "too bad your just going to be fat and die"???? I've personally struggled my whole life with weight issues. Some people just have no clue and cannot even comprehend what happens to Fat people! your opinion of 12 yr olds can easy loose weight completely disgusts me. Because its all encompassing when there are circumstances that make your statments FALSE!

It's true that everyone has a different body type, and that some can lose weight, while others cannot do it quite so easily. It's one of those circumstances where I have to hear the story before passing judgement. Do I think it is acceptable in extreme circumstances? Yes I do. Do I think it is a good exucse to not exercise or eat well? No I do not.

I have to agree with what you said. I actually seen the story of the 12 yr old girl who got it, she'd tried EVERYTHING, and her father had cancer. The doctor took a big risk, and it did pay off, 1 for the girl and 2 for self promotion for himself. I don't think surgery is the answer for anyone in place of the right diet and exercise. Only when all other avenues have been exhausted and its the last resort, that is when i find execptable for ALL AGES not just children but adults as well.

If my child suffered from extreme weight problems then yes I would let them get it done.

I cannot believe the amount of people that OPT for sugery. To me having surgery puts yourself in possible risk of several things that could go wrong. I just can't see it. As for this type of surgery for such a young person? I don't think I would take this route if I was the parent. I would first try everything to help the child and when he/she is of age....allow them to draw their own conclusions...

I don't approve of it at any age, especially a child. It's better to learn proper eating and exercise. That proceedure isn't always safe.

My child would have to be in danger of dying from obesity before I would consider this type surgery. I have seen it performed on TV and it looks very painful for the recovery. The incisions are small but they are very rough when performing the procedure so the recovery I imagine is sore for days!

Doesn't liposuction have risks that come with it? Liposuction was probably the last resort of the girl's family. They are too brave to make her undergo the surgery, it's really hard to imagine a girl doing it but it's understandable. They are horrible people in the world that prey of obese or fat people, that must be the reason. Still I can't understand why the other methods didn't work on her. Her digestive system must be really slow in digesting food.

That is my thought too....all surgeries have risk. Liposuction also is subject to infection and or skin discoloration beyond the normal bruising. Anesthesia is also a huge risk. One does not know that one my be allergic to anesthesia until they are put under. I have read cases where the anesthesia has killed people. This is also a risk with liposuction.

Shoo! I'd be so quick to judge if not reading the article 1st. I guess in extreme cases only and only once other methods have been tried i guess one could see it as a last resort. Not something i'm very keen on but i guess if one is desperate and this is a possibility, then by all means.

I cannot understand a child having this done at 12. Both my kids at 12 had puppy fat and I thought they may be gaining too much weight. However, within a year the fat had gone as they grew and went through puberty. Kids need this fat as they are developing and if they are extremely obese, then the parents should take control of what foods are in their cupboards. Giving lipsuction at such a young age is not really dealing with the problem. If when the child gets older and the problem is still there I see no problem in it. But I personally feel 12 is too young.

I hate to say it, but I think there are probably situations where it's okay for this to happen. I remember a kid I went to school with when I was younger who had weight problems because of a dysfunctional organ...can't remember which one...but he was made fun of all of his life, and I can't imagine that humiliation. But I think what upsets me the most about all of this is just the fact that self-image has gotten so out of hand. There's no room for people to be beautiful when they have a large frame or large body size - they way they were created is no longer good enough for society and that's so depressing in my opinion. I wish there was some way to simply change the way society views people. Of course, America seems to be the largest country with the over-weight epidemic...and sadly enough I fall into that category - and it really does affect my self-esteem...but that's another post for another time :).

That kinda scares me. What happened to good old excercise. I dont think that I would allow it with my own children. But could understand a parents frustration with their childrens struggles. They must be some kind of side effects in that young of a child. I dont know. It would probably depend on the situation for me. But I think other ways should probably come before the decision of Liposuction.

I can't even imagine why a 12 year old would be getting liposuction-even if obesity was a problem. Some kids grow up and out of adolescence without the earlier childhood weight. I know that some do not, and tend to stay heavy or get bigger, but a 12 year old girl still has some growing to do. WHat will happen when she develops into an actual woman? Even skinny teens tend to get some weight when they finish growing

i think it is totally crazyyyyyy if u ask me.a 12 year old is still growing.they should bring there child to a nutritionist or something .letting them get liposuction is a bit extreme.also lipo is not going to last forver its just a quick fix.

Kids can definitely be cruel, especially when it comes to weight. I don't like the idea of liposuction as a solution though. Any surgery can be dangerous, and I'm concerned about what liposuction can do to a growing body. I know there are some safer procedures like the lap band. It's safer than gastric bypass; it just involves putting a band around the opening of the stomach to make it smaller. It can be adjusted as needed. Again, I'm not sure if this is something that would be good for kids, but I think it would be safer than liposuction. I would definitely try everything else first (just as with an adult) and work with a doctor on a diet and exercise program, and make sure the kid doesn't have some rare metabolic disorder that might require medication.
