Locking down the schools. Good idea or Paranoia run rampant?

In the wake of the recent school shootings in our nation, our school district has installed a new security sytem. The students in middle school now have to wear encoded badges in order to enter many parts of the school. No one (eg Parents)can enter the school except by pushing an intercom button. I think this is overkill. We are a small school district (town of 10,000) and have spent thousands of dollars reacting to what is thankfully, a rare occurance. I would not be opposed to htese measures if I actually thought they would be effective. but I just don't think that anyone who really wanted to get in would be kept out by these changes. I can think of a lot better way to support our children with the $70,000 that they spent on this system. Who thinks this is a good idea?

I guess with the rampage at schools that have been going on has frightened a lot of people, parents leave their children at school expecting they will be safe and I guess the school has a responsibility to look after those children no matter what...it is sad that they have to take extreme measures but I guess it is better to be safe than sorry.

I definitely agree that it is better to be safe than sorry, especially with the well being of our children being at a higher risk now than it used to be. The fact that they are doing something is great to hear since I have not heard of many schools taking an extra precautions.

I think it is good that they are taking measures like this one that they are using as it may be at least somewhat of a deterrent to people trying to commit any types of crimes. No system is full proof so no matter what system you use there is always going to be a flaw with it. Other schools should take note of this, especially the ones that have higher crime rates or are in an area where there is a lot of crime.
