Dreams and vocations

After witnessing the landing of Man on the moon at a tender age, I decided to become an astronaut. I undertook the right studies to be able to join the Air Force as a fighter pilot, which was the requirement to later be considered for space flights. At the age of seventeen, I enquired with my local Air Force recruitment office. I was doing everything right study-wise, and I was both mentally and physically fit for the job. However, I was told that my short-sightnedness would prevent me from ever flying a jet, let alone go to space. So I dropped everything. Luckily enough, I realised that I was good at Natural Sciences and interested in all forms of life. I subsequently went to that direction and I am now a biologist, a job that I enjoy despite the frustration of having worked for big pharma concerns that are more preoccupied with making as much money as possible than with human health. How about you? Did you have any childhood dreams that you couldn't concretise? Or did achieve your original vocation?

Like I said, a job is always better when you enjoy it, regardless of whether you'd planned to do it or not.

When I was a child I admired Barbara Walters and wanted to be a journalist. That was my dream job. Then my family got involved with a religious cult and we had our brains washed that pursuing worldly jobs like that were devilish. They brainwashed us to go to their schools and colleges, etc and become leadership for their programs and own agendas. So I went to their school and college and wasted so many years that I could have used for my dream career. Today I am a stay at home mom. NOt that its not rewarding, but I sometimes wonder...what if? Thanks for the topic.

Awww... I hate when a vocation that could have turned out good is wasted. I'm really sorry to hear that. Being a 'stay-at-home-mum' may not have been your dream job, but it's certainly a full-time job that must keep you quite busy! Thanks for sharing :)

Whatever job people do, it's always good to be happy in it. It gives more motivation than just doing it to put food on the table. Thanks for the response.

Well in high school I studied medical careers and wanted to be a RN. However life events popped up left and right and I ended up going down a stupid road, that kept me lost for 7 years. Once I had gotten my life straightened out, I ended up with a little girl. Now my time and money is invested in raising my children. So at this point in my life, I have become very interested in children and education. I worked as an Early Educator for sometime, until my children were both diagnosed as severe Asthmatics, which keeps me home with them too often to hold a job. Eventually I think I would like to go back to college and maybe be a Teacher. The Medical field just doesn’t appeal to me any more.

I've always been interested in space travel, but colourblindness doesn't allow me to be any kind of pilot. I've always enjoyed Science subjects wanting some kind of scientific job, and became a Biomedical Scientist a long time ago (seems like several centuries), always working for the National Health Service doing blood tests, I've recently moved onto the I.T. side of things, which I also enjoy. Working in the NHS will never be a well paid job, but I get immense job satisfaction helping to save lives. Did you know that these days, doctor in NHS hospital are incapable of making a correct diagnosis without getting lots of blood tests done? One reason why U.K. patients spend so much time in A&E. It looks like our jobs could complement each other, with you as a biologist.

You're more on the clinical side of things, and I am -- was -- more into the research. So yes, we complement each other :) Thanks for sharing!

You can't always do what you want in life. But as long as you're happy in your job, may it be astronaut or mechanic, that's what really matters.

Better in you because at least your job now makes you happy in behalf that your dream to become a space astronaut failed you. Acceptance of failure drove you to a right wing. My dream has been fulfilled but I'm not satisfied as of what is happening to my life now. When I was a kid I dream to become a computer engineer. I graduated in this course but I find hard looking for a job in this field here in the Philippines. Maybe I did not give my best shot during interview. I always failed during those times. How I wish I can get a job that will make me happy.

I wanted to be a writer from about age 10 (I am 37 now). I was decent at short stories in high school but never pursued getting more education to help with the goal. The last 6 months or so I have been writing articles for a website and getting paid. I now am working on some articles for a magazine that I hope they buy. My real goal is to write a book and get it published, but writing is writing and I enjoy doing the articles.

It's great to have dream that you pursue in life and try to materialise them. True enough, there are times where you can't get what you want in life, but no matter what its important that you enjoy what you are doing. For me, I did not have any dreams when I was a kid. Until recent year, I realise how important and the possible impact it will have on a person if you had a dream and try to fulfill it. As such I did some soul searching and decided on being a finance consultant in the future. I have a stable job now and its definitely not a finance consultant but at least I enjoyed doing it. I am trying to build my wealth, my current job will not be able to enable me to create a wealth that will last me a lifetime though I won't go hungry. Once I have my wealth I would be able to pursue my dream of becoming a finance consultant. One who charge little and help those in need and put them back into their life. Wish me luck to accomplish my dreams.

I was a bit of a rebel as a teenager, and got a later start with my career. After graduating from high school, I planned on marrying my boyfriend of 4 years. Suddenly I woke up, grew up, and dumped him because I wanted to go to college (I had no specific career in mind, but knew that I wanted more out of life) and he didn't want me to. I ended up taking a Medical Assistant Certificate course at a business school, and worked in a doctor's office briefly until I became bored and realized that I could do much better for myself. I got my RN from a community college and then worked as a nurse while completing my Bachelor's degree in nursing. After 15 years of working as an RN, I graduated with my Master's Degree/Nurse Practitioner license. I am now happy with my career and my life; but it would have been a lot simpler had I dedicated myself to school when I was younger.

My problem is that my dreams constantly changed! When I was in primary school I was interested in planes and had arranged to do work experience as an air traffic controller. This however didn't eventuate. I didn't do overly well in High School so had a limited number of employment options so ended up in hospitality initially. This was not my dream job but I temporarily convinced myself it was and aimed at a management role.... Age was my barrier so this didn't happen either. Now I work in the business world. But on the way I dreamt of massive success in real estate, telecommunications, IT and even horticulture! Now I don't really have a dream that I am pursuing career wise, I just try to give every job I have the best that I have and see where it takes me!

I had a dream of becoming an aeronautical engineer from IIT, but unfortunately I was from a village school that too in my mother tounge medium. Our english teacher used to come drunk and least bothered teaching. I was very very poor at English. When I appeared the entrance exam for IIT, I could not even complete reading the first question on preci writing & the time for that question paper eas over. And I was depressed. Actually I was a scholar in maths & science but This language problem made me sick. I however continued my studies and got admission in a Govt. engineering college and completed my graduation in Mechanical Engineering. I joined so many jobs but no where I was getting satisfied. I was too money minded in those days. Because of the poverty back ground and the bitter memories of childhood. I wanted to make a great money. This thinking kept me restless all the time and I used to think That to be a businessman could help me to reach the destination. I joined and resigned 24 jobs in 4 years and atlast I decided to start a trading business in engineering good to various gove & semi govt. departments. after earning some bucks my next goal was to start a small scale Industry. Mean time durring the trading business I got married which again pulled me back on all aspects. I was totally frustrated. Later I started learning computer at the age of 37 and got a expertise in various design engineering softwares. With this background I worked as CAD consultent for twelve years in various automobile companies earned some money. Nowadays I am not working anymore in this field. I mean, have opted retirement. Being skilled, technical and a normal man I am spending time on I'net to keep myself busy. I haven't yet reached my ambition. But I am not going to give-up.

After reading Flight of the Intruder I wanted to be a Naval Pilot. When I found out I have no depth perception and couldn't fly, I decided to go into aerospace engineering so I could design aircraft. Once I decided I couldn't stand math or science, I decided on politics. I wanted to be President. I'm still working on that one however, as I went to 3 years of college, dropped out to work on political campaigns and haven't gone back yet. As you can see by looking at my other postings, politics is still my passion.

I have spent 36 years of my life in a bank out of which 30 years were trouble free & I got some time for my hobbies. But for the last six years things have worsened after I took promotions. After that there is no time limit/work limit as such some 12-14 hours are consumed by the business of the institute yet the controllers/administrators bark that they are not satisfied. we are penalised for the weaknesses/mistakes/lack of experience of our controllers & get ill treatment from them whole the day. Finally I have tendered my resignation. After acceptance of my resignation and getting out of the hang over of troubles/shocks of last six years I will get myself directed to my hobbies. Thoygh now I am 60 years old and do not have the capacity to fulfill them wholly yet I am satisfied that I can now live with my dreams/creativity.

I always knew I'd either end up doing something in music, acting or writing, as those were my main interests and talents. I chose writing because I figured I'd have an easier time making a career in writing than in the other two. Also, (and this sounds really stupid, but it's true), I wanted to meet Paul McCartney (my musical idol). I figured if I went into journalism, maybe someday I'd get to meet him. Four years after having that thought, I was a reporter and I got to ask Paul McCartney questions at a press conference held before his 1990 Lexington, Ky., concert, which I covered. It literally was a dream come true, and in a relatively short amount of time. So my vocation was already implanted in me at a young age, but my dream of something else made my vocation come true.
