I have the same problem, I have a sweet gum tree in my backyard and the sap kills anything I try to grow near it. You can do box gardening in the front yard. You can build the boxes yourself or do what I do. This is called tabletop gardening. You get an old table or just an outside table, then either make some boxesor use old drawers from a chest. Prepare each drawer with your potting soil and plant your garden in them. They are mobile now and can stay on the table or be moved to different parts of the yard. I have done this for flowers but it should work for anything else too.

I usually plant a container garden. I use buckets for veggies so they can have good root growth. You can paint them and decorate them to your liking. I always try to paint my tomato buckets black with bright designs, because they like the heat and the dark color absorbs it better. You can use all kinds of things to plant flowers in.
Try planting in an old pair of shoes and placing them on your steps, or a cacuts in an old cowboy boot. Have fun and get creative...lol

Actually, I don't think you can do much of a food garden if the tree shades out most of the yard. How about a flower garden? There are tons of flowers and greenery that grow well in the shade. Maybe you could stick a few containers of veggies on the fringes where the sun isn't blocked out. I usually do cherry tomatoes in containers even though I have a sunny area for food gardening. They seem to like it and they look good.

It might be that the soil in your garden is the wrong type for the veggies you want to grow. I'd recommend getting a book on gardening out of the library, as that should tell you how to prepare your garden beds, and put the right drainage/acidity levels/nutrients into the soil, and how far from the tree to plant your veggies too. If all else fails, you could try growing your veggies in some big pots in the garden (there are plenty of books on how to do this too). Good luck, and happy gardening!
