What's your opinion on the death penalty?

I have to admit, for a long time I supported the idea of capital punishment. I think my reason for that was basically anger and outrage from a case in my neighborhood where a little boy was kidnapped, raped and murdered...I wanted to see that animal who commited the crime put to death...That was an emotionally charged feeling... Over the last few years I began to change my views for a few reasons... I think the first misconception people have when you tell them you are against capital punishment is that you take an "easy on crime" attitude or even worse..you have compassion for the offender..Neither is true for me personally...Lock them up forever, take away thier freedom and thier ability to ever offend again... I look at the bigger picture on this issue and feel the death penalty hurts society the most, what we as a society will find acceptable..If we believe murder is wrong, than it must be wrong for all of us, including our goverments... I think of two quotes that fit my feeling on the subject well... "An eye for an eye, leaves the whole world blind" as well as "Barbarians, that is what we've become..We kill each other instead of mourning the tragedy, we want the state to satisfy our bloodlust by killing the offender..we must learn to deal with these people in our midst..PUNISH THEM..but DO NOT become them" Another aspect to this all that really bothers me is that although rare, there have been a couple of cases where someone executed was later cleared of the crime..And even if this is something that in all of the history of capital punishment has only happened ONCE..it's too much for me to feel good about... Shary

I agree with you because some times innocent people are killed all because they could not aford a good lawyer,i also think that when you start killing people because they have murdered someone, you are hurting their family not them because they have been taken out of here, i say lock them up and let them die slowly

Well Hi..... Sorry to hurt you, but I dont agree you at all! are u from Europe or America? How can u forget terror strikes there? These terrorist can be only punished by hanging! Also why to suffer economicaly by keeping them in Prison for whole life? They should be killed.

it depends...under what curcumtances the culpit have cummitted the crime. as far i know "no body have the right to take nybody's life as he/she can't create it" if the is no capital punishment people may become to easy going thinking that they will never face capital punishment ,an if there is it is like eye for an eye make the whole world.... so that depends...

also i in order much time has been in favor of the capital punishment, but now i become account that nobody to the world has the right to remove the life to a prisoner, any can be the reason. the jail of life exists, task that is a heavy but just pain, so the capital punishment for me does not have some sense.

well...it's cruel to kill someone.....it's not you who have given a person life...its' god who has given him with life..so only god has the right to do everything.....if the person has done a serious crime..he should not be hanged....but can be given a life imprisonmnent

human cannot create themselve,THEY DONT HAVE THAT POWER.if someone cannot create then they should not have the power to destroy!! in case of the most barbarian act that person should be JUST cut off the world and feel the pain of being alone.

I think only God has the right to take lives! No matter what a bad guy does the only thing we are right to do is to isolate him from society, jail, and that's it!

Tell this to the family of the victim! and see if they agree with you! its easy for us to pass our opinion but the in reality the ones who should get to decide about the offenders fate is the family or relatives of the victim! This is what i think!

It's the same with me also. I was in favour of Capital Punishment till recently. Now I feel do we have the power to take away someone's life. There is no doubt it's the feeling of revenge gets most importance in the case of Capital Punishment. Those who have done the crime should feel that they have done something terribly wrong, so there can be some other way like you suggested to punish these offenders. I appreciate you for starting such a great discussion.

I don't think it is a good idea, but where there is absolutely no doubt, DO IT, at least they won't then be allowed out to do it again. do gooders can do bad things, unfortunately

i thimk i'll put it this way... if a person is convicted of anywrong doing, he should pay the consequences of his acts. whether he gets life or get the deathpenalty, he deserves it.
