depression is as much a physical condition as it is a mental illness. It is serious and should never be underated. I think medical advice is always necessary but there are alternatives to tablets in most cases. We need first of all to identify what depression is. It is not just feeling down or the blues but feels like there is no way out of any given situation and that you yourself are powerless. This type of thinking develops as a result of depressed neural functioning and can be corrected by increasing this activity. Regular physical activity can help but so can diatry changes, particularly an increase in iron and zinc rich foods.
