The focus on preventing HIV transmission to babies is an important and necessary one, but it can lead to a narrowed perspective. It’s equally important to help women who don’t have children as well as those who do.Often, especially in resource-poor countries, many women live in areas where there is little or no medical infrastructure, and where they come into contact with HIV testing and care services only through antenatal care. This is inadequate, as it excludes women who are not pregnant. There is a clear need for HIV testing to be more inclusive.

Yes, I do think it is appropriate for the couple to take HIV tests before marriage, for two reasons. One so that you don't end up marrying someone with HIV and contracting it yourself (assuming you haven't already slept with that person) and so that you can find out for yourself that you don't have HIV. I wonder how many people were planning on marrying only to find out that they were positive? I'm 31 years old, and that's the only time I'd ever been tested for it. It's not like you run out and have yourself tested every 6 months or so (at least, most people don't). So, I agree with testing.

For me, I wouldn't get married without taking an HIV test. No matter how likely it is to be negative. Maybe it because I'm a health educator, but that's just my rule.
