Define a webmaster

Hi everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I have been attempting to teach myself the art of web design and site building. I have been doing it on and off for nearly three years now and I feel I have made a lot of progress. The other day I made the statement to a friend from another site that I will be glad when I can be concidered a webmaster. And he replied that I already was. I think I have a long way to before I can call myself a webmaster, becuase I have only figured out simple HTML and a little CSS. Although I am getting pretty good at Java also, I still have a hard time understanding all of it's codes. I have began making banners for a few sites that I do not own, but again still ahve a lot to learn on that subject also. So my question is this..... What do you think constitutes calling yourself or others a webmaster?

From the work you have done on your site and being self taught, makes you a webmaster, you own and created the site from an idea. Having knowledge in different areas like php scripting and knowing various codes do not a webmaster make, that makes you a programmer...and many programmers have years and years of schooling to learn the various languages to create a website. Your skilled, i saw your site.

wel i think web masters and web designers are different, web designers are those who design website and web master are those person who develope website like front end and backend scripting and database management simply use php,asp and mysql. In simple words web designers are those who create static website and web masters are those who create dynamic website, do you like my response? thanks dude

I think it just means you are the master of your site, I think even the ones who don't build their own site are the webmaster if they are in charge of it...

Instead we should consider ourselves beginners in the world of programming, the moment you will start considering yourself as webmaster you will stop progressing.So better don't consider yourself one.

being able to make a simple website qualifies you as a webmaster. With extensive training and knowledge of web designing and server side programming like PHP/ASP.NET or Java you will now considered a WEB Developer.

i think a webmaster is a person who know some languages such as html, css, java, php...but also english! :) a webmaster know how to create a website starting from a bloc notes, because he knows the computer languages. he can also create some images and the graphic part of the website...
