Green tea and whiskey as a cure for sickness, and other crazy ideas

One of my old coworkers used to mix green tea and Jack Daniel's when he had fallen ill. Some say it's crazy, but others have said in all seriousness that it is something that works to break up the congestion and other things. I've never tried it myself, so I am currently on the fence. Sway me one way or the other: does it work? What are your experiences with it? Share other folk remedies that might seem odd, but have worked for you, as well.

I h ave never heard of that before I know green tea does help with sickness, but mixing it with whiskey...that doesn't even sound like it would taste good.

EGCG found in green tea relieves allergies. So, if you have allergies, you should really consider drinking green tea.L-theanine, which is a kind of amino acids in green tea, can help relieve stress and anxiety. Catechin found in green tea can kill bacteria which causes food poisoning and kills the toxins produced by those bacteria.

Yes, it's called a "hot toddy" and it's a classic remedy for the cold or flu-- It's hot tea with lemon, honey, and whiskey, each of which has definitely health benefits. Whether putting them all together is effective or not is probably not agreed upon, but I know it makes me feel better when I'm sick.

Oh yeah, this has definitely worked for me. I was sick the day after Thanksgiving, I think. I had a sore throat. And my dad gave me tea with some Jack Daniels in it, and it does work. It numbs the throat. It doesn't work for a long time, mind you, but it does put you out of misery for a couple of hours or so.

sounds interesting, there is a lot to be said for some things like that, the plain old ordinary Apple Cider Vinegar is good for so many things so I done see why this is so crazy.

Green tea is good for a lot of thing, as it contains lots of anti-oxydants. But must let the tea in the cup with water for 3-5 minutes. About the wiskey...

Never heard that one. I had a Puerto Rican friend(only saying that to show which culture it came from) say her grandma used to make her drink a concoction of ginger root, honey, butter, and lemon for congestion, boil them up together. It was kinda gross lol, not that bad not great though. Seemed to work temporarily, but I eventually ended up in the ER with really bad bronchitis. Maybe it'd work better with a minor cold or something. If you think about it, that's a lot of the ingredients in cough drops and such. And honey, lemon, and tea are usually recommended for throat problems as well.

well, thats very interesting idea to mix green tea with whiskey, though grean tea has many curing functions here, especially in helping digesting, keeping shape (to keep you thin) etc. btw, i got a very special recipe to cure chilblain. it must be done in summer, very simple and effective.

My parents used to use whiskey, honey and lemon as a decongestant and cough syrup for me, and i used it with my children...you can even put a couple of soft peppermint sticks in a jar of whiskey and use it for colds and coughs..whiskey has been used for a very long time for chest congestion and coughing..it really does work...folk remedies usually work just as good as "modern" medicine, as people needed to come up with cures instead of having to pay a doctor,...even when there weren't doctors around some areas...look at it this way, the modern day aspirin was derived from willow bark..and old people knew how to use that willow bark before the word "aspirin" was ever known..and eating a few bites of raw potato will cure heartburn. These are just a few of the old folk remedies that i have used..i mostly prefer them to "modern" medicine.

I have always given my kids hot jello to drink for cold congestion and also rehydration after a night of vomiting. It actually can reduce fever as well. The remedy was given to me by a woman whose boy couldn't take tylenol or aspirin because it gave him convulsions. The doctor told her to feed him hot jello to drink to bring his fever down. It worked and is also good for all the ills I mentionned.

OMG.. first time I was deathly sick with flu or cold when I was in college... a friend of mine made me a hot toddy. Whiskey and .. heck if there was much else... lol.. warmed up. Let's just say... I slept like a baby! LOL I'm pretty sure it didn't do a thing to get rid of the cold.. but it did help me sleep!

I have heard of the "hot toddy" someone mentioned earlier with the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice for a cold and congestion. I knew green tea had a lot of health benefits but I didn't know about it being used for congestion. I'll have to give it a try sometime.
