HI in my office I have seen very reserved Colleagues who dont like to chat on the internet while they work on computer. They also see others suspciously if somebody likes to chat on internet. My previous colleagues in different organisation were doing that. Even in this office my immediate boss is online chatting several hours. I want to ask if I am finishing my daily tasks as per scheduled and if its not affecting my work should i stop chatting on the internet in the office? Whats your Opinion.

Depends on what is your job, why are you doing your job, just to manage to get by those working hours and tasks or you have some higher motivation (like you want to improve your status, etc), and things like this. If you do want to get forward in your job, get higher in your career, more educated in your field, etc, then take a look at this: does chatting take you forward? If yes, you can do it, if not, you should better spend your time with something that is related to your job. Even if you have done your tasks for the day, you can find something to read about it, etc.

i think you should. When ure at work, the only thing you should be concerned about is ur wrk. Chatting, even when ure free, shows that you dont like to interact wif ur colleagues. Try and talk to them rather than chat online

I personally don't like chatting online while i work as it can be distracting. But in your case after finishing your daily tasks as per schedule and since it is not affecting your work, and since your colleagues including your boss are alos doing it, i think there is no harm if you chat online sometimes as you are bored and want o have some fun. But dont' distract your othr colleagues who are working and don't strain your eyes too much as you might tired. just chill and have fun. goo dluck.

ofcourse its not that much bad. as you were chatting after ur work. mostly i know someone who also does this at his office. but be sure that ur manager points that and if he is a different knid, then u must be careful.

I think chatting while working is not a healthy habit to practice in the office because it affects our performance even though we say it doesnt effect.

I agree but its not true always. It depends on the Person capability. If he can perform well even though he chat its his capability. He can do that right

Its ok if you are system administrator in your office but if its not your job to do chatting online its bad it causes loss to the companies ethics. What i mean is it depends on your status there in your company.

i think with working reedreshment is quite necesary. continues working leads to boredom and lack of interest so it can be a refreshing tonic in the busy life.

chatting during office hours is definitely unethical and i don't think that is right. the company is paying you for the work and time you do in the office. other business is not good.

well, if it's not related on your work then it's really bad, you should focus on your work coz you're being paid by your boss.

Actually, in my office, all the people spend lots of time to chat on the internet everyday. I think it's OK, because we need to chat with our clients, with our colleagues, not every chat is private chatting. If you can do your job well, it's Ok, I think, but if you have lots of tasks to fullfill, you'd better stop chatting, after all, your boss give you money, you should deserve it.

if the purpose of your chatting is for the company, then it is good, but when you are busy and have to do a lot of accomplishment but you are just chatting, that is very bad.

I you should be responsible, as long as your doing great in your job while chatting, i don't see that point why you should stop

chatting is a big distraction while working.it slows you down.for example if you are typing a project which you have to finish by the end of the day while you are chatting.when you are typing the project a thought comes to you-has xyz replied?-you check you messenger and see it.so this way a lot of time is wasted while chatting.

Well, I don't usually chat or surf the net during office hours because this will distract me from my work & would affect my performance at work. But on the otherhand, a few minutes or so of chatting/surfing is not that bad just to ease your boredom or some sort of booster to keep you up at work. Other people's job, such as call center or service oriented like bank requires focus on the job at hand especially because your first-hand dealing w/ client but for others such as clerk (please don't be offended cause i'm one too) whose work is very redundant & "clerical" , this type of "booster" is acceptable. Also, chatting, if put on a professional way like surfing for solutions on problems at work or getting opinion on what's the best technique to handle a situation in office is not that bad. The only thing we have to remember is to do things in moderately, proper way & proper time. As long as you finish what is required from you & more, I don't see any reason that this is not good.
