Do You Wear An Apron?

United States

I love aprons. I wear mine anytime I am in my kitchen. I use it to protect my clothes and to pick up pots and pans. I have many different ones in my kitchen drawer. When I am going to a family Grill out, I take my apron. I just love aprons In pioneer days, the woman always wore aprons. They used them to protect their dresses, as a pot holder to pick up pots and pans, to wipe the kids tears away and many other things. It was a normal part of their clothing. Lately, I have heard many people say that aprons are out of style. I disagree! I think they are so cool. Do you wear an apron? What do you use your apron for? Do you take your apron to family grill outs or just at home?

You are going to laugh at this but....I gave both my daughters and their husbands aprons for Christmas. The guys always seem to do most of the grilling and they need one too. Anytime you use a grill, you have grease all over you. My daughter are 25 and 27 and they always wear an apron too. My mother never did wear one.

i just bought two aprons last week! i am used to wearing aprons whenever i am in the kitchen. i usually wear one when doing the dishes and cooking. i wanted my clothes protected. aprons are very useful in the kitchen. i, too do my laundry in my kitchen sink. yes, i hand wash my laundry. and it's very important to be wearing an apron when doing it. i get to avoid the water spilling over my clothes. a no, aprons will never be out of style! it's a necessity especially to us who loves the kitchen!

I totally agree with you. A wet stomach is sure to make you change your clothes. I tend to get water all over my stomach when I was dishes also

It's never even crossed my mind! I'm very neat :) I almost never spill on myself when I cook. I do agree, they can be cool if you wear the right ones, but I always picture ladies wearing them with fancy dresses and such - whereas I'm usually in some regular clothes that I can clean if I have to. I wouldn't say they are out of style though, b/c I see many current TV shows where ladies where them. If you want to keep your clothes clean, then go for it :)

I have never wore an apron in my life to cook with anyhow. I do remember wearing them when I was a little girl to play dress up. My mom wore them everyday, it was just part of her outfit. She to used them for everything and I can still see her picking up those hot pans with it. She still tells me to this day that I should wear them when I am in the kitchen as I would not get my clothing so dirty. It is just a habit that I never got into.

I guess if you never got into it, you dont feel the need to do it now. An apron is something that you either love or hate.

I don't mind wearing an apron, but most of the time when I'm cooking are frying food, I'm too lazy to wear it. I just don't like to put in the extra effort. I guess it is because I don't really mind something splattering on me or that I hope nothing will splatter on me while cooking. I agree with you that apron serves the purpose of protecting you clothes from getting dirty. I remember when I went to Beijing for studying abroad. My Beijing classmates brought me to this SiChuan Hot Pot place and the service there was amazing. To the point of this topic they help each of us put on an apron so that we don't get our clothes dirty, but too bad we don't get to keep it. It would be a good souvenir.

Wow!That is interesting that a restaurant would put aprons on the customers. That is so cooL! Yes, it would have been a great souvenir. I would love to go to Beijing but I would be so out of place. I cannot speak the language. You were so fortunat to have such a wonderful experience

LOL You must not live in neighborhood. Most of the older and middle aged women wear them. Some younger ones are beginning to wear them also. Seems that they begin wearing them after they have a child. LOL

Actually, I don't wear an apron, but I should. As soon as I come home from work, I get dinner ready and I can't tell you how many times I've gotten food on my good dress clothes! One of these days I should make one, or ask for one for my birthday!

That would be a great Birthday gift. It would be better than a new dress because it would save you many new dresses. LOL Thanks for your comment.

No I dont wear a apron. My mother always did when I still lived at home. When she cooked the meals she always had one on.I think she probably had about 4 of them. I do not think the aprons are out of style at all. but I just dont wear one. But should start so I can protect my clothes.

It does protect your clothes well and I sorta like to wipe my hands on it when they get wet. I also use mine to take bread out of the oven with.

I never wear an apron.I cook in tye clothes that I have on. If my clothes are to get dirty, I just put them in the wash. I think an apron is really unnessicary. It is just for fashion and nothing more.

There are also others who agree with you. This has really been a fun conversation.

I think, perhaps, aprons were more common when people didn't change their clothes every day. the apron would keep the clothes clean, and was easier to wash than their day to day clothes. meaning the clothes could be worn longer.

in high school, i am enrolled to a cooking class and our teacher requires an apron whenever we go in the kitchen.. we are wearing a white uniform, so i guess it is very useful for us to use it.. now that im in college, my apron is now being folded inside the closet.. not that i dont want to use it, but because i only cook sometimes.. our class last time is about baking, too bad our oven at home was destroyed by a rat! honestly, seeing myself in the mirror with an apron is cute! it makes me think im a good baker!

It is truly amazing how the clothes we were give us a sense of power or an attitude change so to speak. I bet you are a great baker. You should unfold that apron and do some baking.

I love to cook, but i never wear an apron. I usually make cookies, but i don't like to wear one because i can't be bothered, and i don't really care if i get something on my clothes..

If you dont care if you get dirty, I dont guess it matters much if you wear an apron. I use mine for other things besides keeping clothes clean also. Like wiping my hands on.

I did when I was a professional cook. My joke was " I'm working hard, but you can't tell because of my apron."

I own an apron, but I never wear it. I should probably start doing that. It would come in handy when I cook things in hot oil and it occassionally splatters.

Yes, I do wear an apron. Not always, but it does help save my clothes from getting stained. My husband likes it when I have it on, he calls me his "little Betty Crocker"
