Why do people get married?

Is it for the commitment of a piece of paper? To appease the parents? To appease God? To make their children legitimate?

I can't speak for others, but for myself getting married to my husband is one of the best experiences of my life. I do enjoy our relationship as he is my best friend. We can talk about anything, go anywhere together and just ride this life out together. I can think of no other I would rather do this with. We love each other so very much and for us marriage just made it that much better between us. We definitely married because we wanted to, with no outside pressure, but just a complete longing to be together. After 23 years of marriage I would say it was a great decision. I do see many people rush into marriage for one reason or another and sometimes I wonder if they are just "in love" with the idea of a wedding. Marriage is definitely hard work, but if you are with the one you honestly and completely love and it is returned, the work is more a joy than hardship.

Believe it or not I loved him and wanted to be with him. Getting out on my own, and haveing a wedding were just some fringe benefits. I guess it was a good choice ; wehave been married 34 years and have 3 great kids and 2 adorable grandkids.

i think it is to show how committed u are to each other that u are willing to commit ur life to each other in front of God, ur family and friends. It shows that that commitment and love u have is so strong and firm that u would go all the way to profess it in front of everyone formally.

I have no clue as the why..but I know that I am happy the way I am. With the man that I love, 3 Adult children between us, 1 grandchild and no paper but the heaviest commitment that anyone could ever make. I am no whole with out Bruce. He completes me.

I think I would get married because I want to have a family of my own. As simple as that. :) Probably we go and say 'I do' to tell the whole world that we are commited to each other and we pledge our vow to GOD that we would stick to our vows. Kids, are a pleasant bonus from Him. The paper of marriage is just to show others that we are legit in front of the humans law. The ring in the finger is to show other men/women to bugger off.

because we need a new generations, wants to build a family (wife husband and children). must invest something (someone who will give us money when we already can't earn money anymore).

Every couple has their own reasons, I suppose. My husband and I got married at least partially to have the legal protections marriage allows. We had already been together for five years when we got married, but the complications unmarried people have to face are many, especially if one of them becomes ill and unable to make their own decisions. There's also the issue of the outside world seeing your commitment to each other, which might have influenced us a little.
