Can police officers be trusted with the power they wield, or can this power become a temptation for abuse?

I think it can be a temptation for abuse. I was really interested in being a police officer. I never did go to the school and do it. I used to pal around with lots of cops. Most I liked. However a few years ago one was after the same girl that I was. He went around bad mouthing me to her and to her friends. Doing all this while on duty in uniform. It got back to me and I confonted him. He was a county deputy. Our dicussion took place in a small town in the county he worked in. 2 of those town cops came to where we were talking (the deputy was on duty) and they wouldn't leave until he did. They were afraid he would make up some reason to arrest me or worse. But for the most part I think most cops are really good people. But one jerk can make them all look bad.

that's true -- I suppose judgements shouldn't be based on the one, but the many. Thanks for replying!

i don't trust anyone, i have had so many cops that get cocky with me. i had called the cops the one time on my ex husband when he was throwing stuff at me and threatened to kill me, and it took them an hour to get to my house and by that time my ex had left and they asked me what i did to make him mad!?!?!?!

I had an experience with a car accident that made me wonder about police as well. I was making a left turn with my turn signal on. I hadn't slammed on my brakes or anything and was slammed into from behind. The guy who ran into me was an off duty ems worker, and he and the offcer who came on the scene were very friendly. I was knocked unconscious and still pretty foggy when the officer asked me about the accident. The police officer gave me a ticket saying that I had to allow him to pass. He refused to listen to eyewitnesses on the side of the road who saw the whole thing. I was on vacation at the time so I started taking pictures of the accident scene to use in court and pulls his car over the skidmarks and just sat there. I got the case thrown out in court but because the officer gave me the ticket, my insurance company raised my rates.

We cannot keep all policemen under one umbrella as good and bad personnel are found in every office. We must have to trust our legal watchdog.

Not any more.Particularly in India, there is lot of biased policing on the basis of religion and money. It is one of the worst profession to chose in our country.

Overall I trust in the police, but I know that there are good and bad police officers just as there are good and bad people in any profession. I think that bad cops get more publicity because their role is "to serve and protect", and when they end up hurting or cheating the people that they are trusted to protect or they break the laws that they are supposed to uphold it is just such an oxymoron that it draws attention. I have to trust that the majority of police officers have the safety of the public as their goal every day.

Sometimes they use their power to abuse of people, but i think that´s only a minority of them. The true is that we cannot live in safe without them. They many times put in risk their lifes because of us.

I used to. Awhile back I lived in a township that had a terific police department. I thought they walked on water. But something happened that made me very distrustful and disillusioned. There was a super rich guy (one of the Dupont family) who was more than a little insane who murdered a young friend living on his estate. What came out afterwards was that the crazy guy had a long history of transgressions that were never punished. He liked to do things like run pedestrians down with his car when he was drunk. Afterwards he bought off his victims AND the police department that I had such regard for. He was nuts and is now in an institution for the criminally insane but I don't think his behavior would ever have escalated to murder if he'd been treated like any other citizen. There was some talk of bringing charges against some members of the police force but nothing ever came of it. It was the entire department anyway. Ever since then I've just felt that taking bribes and abusing power and trust is probably a way of life for most police departments. I know I'm generalizing but that's still the way I feel even though I respect the job they do and I'm glad they're there, I don't trust them.

I would hate to see them all lumped together and judged one way. Like everything, there are good and bad and this goes for people also, no matter the occupation. I've seen some go out of their way to help people when off duty. Some will pass you by on the road with a flat tire on duty and in uniform. It just all depends... So, to answer your question, I would say yes it is a temptation for some but not all.

I wish I could say I trust the police 100%, but I don't. There is so much corruption and racism running through our police system it's crazy. I've had so many bad experiences with law enforcement, and I'm only 22 years old. I've seen them first hand let go two white men when they were the ones who assualted the people at hand who were not white. After that experience I lost faith in the law enforcement in the US. I know there are good cops out there, but I think there should be more reforms to stop the corruption going on. If they are the law how do you stop them though?
