Stop Child Labour. I am shocked!

I am shocked to find out that many of my friends use poor children for domestic help. Their justification is that by doing this they are helping the child support her/his family. But is this really the case? Even in some dire need, parents are not allowed to let their children work. But if that happens, it is the duty of the educated masses who are aware of the legal and ethical issues to dissuade them. But on the contrary, it is the upper class educated people who continue the exploitation of children who are not supposed to worry their heads out and be forced to do hard physical labour. They need a childhood, don't they? What do you think?

I think child labour is cruel to the young children and teenagers. They should just be kids, and enjoy life as a child. It's normal for an older child (8 & up) to help out a bit around the house, but to do hard labour like this, continuously? No way, i'm totally against that.

Thank you jewel and all the other seven friends who hace responded. I am not answering them all personally because we all seem to share some similar views here. The concept of child labour differes in various cultures, but we all seem to agree that a child deserves childhood. some helping around at home, or some work just to earn a pocket money without working too hard may be good experiences for a child. But when we put a child in a situation where s/he is forced to work, it may ruin her/his childhjood. Thanks all. I have rated all of you + because all of you have taken qaulity time to say what you really think about this.

I agree. We need to allow children to be children. They should not be expected to work in such situations. When they are older they will have enough of that to last a life time. They do not need to start it early in life. Let them have their time to be kids. To enjoy their life and have fun, it's what childhood should be about. It should not be about working or earning a living. Yes if they are old enough let them work around the home to help out but not out in the work force.

I t depends on what kind of labour are you talking about as parents we pay our kids an allowance to do thier chores and we pay the neighbor kids to do our lawns and shovel our walks in the winter and most kids get a good feeling of acomplisment when they get paid for a job well done and they also learn responsabilaty and they also take better care of the things that they bought with the money they earned so there are pros and cons to this discusion but if they are being forced to work then it is wrong but if they do it because they whant to earn thier own money then I dont see any thing wrong with it.

i agree we should not support child labor and do our part to stop it. because i believe every children has the right to enjoy their childhood they should be studying and playing and not working and be slaves to those who are taking advantages of their weaknesses.

I don't like the idea of child labor, but I think that it depends on the country & culture where you live. As an American, it's illegal here and we encourage our kids to be children. But in a lot of parts of the world, it's normal and expected. Children never really get a chance to be children because it's not really possible in their society.

Yes I agree with you completely. I had hires a maid recently and she brought her five year old daughter to help her clean the floors, I was horrified at the suggestion, actually when I came in to the room from kitchen the girl was cleaning the floors with wet cloth. I asked her to stop and asked maid not to let her do that. I told her its against the law to make kids work. the Maid looked at me as if I am from Mars and completely crazy. She told me the girl has to learn these things and she is good at doing the work as she has been doing this for a long time. I told her may be but she wont do so in my house. Guess what maid finished her work and did not return again. I saw her working in another house in my nieghbourhood, which I am sure is allowing the little girl to work too. I want to go up to that lady and ask her to stop making that girl work but since I do not know her really don't know how to approach her. I wish I could report them somewhere. In India its a problem with every third worker you get so I don't knoe if anyone will take my complaint also seriously.

It is inappropriate indeed that they exploit these children to save up on wages. Children should enjoy their childhood and their responsibility must never go beyond household chores which should teach them discipline and some values in life. But to go beyond this and let children earn some living to somewhat support their families is very irresponsible act on the part of parents. Why have children in the first place when you can't properly raise them.

I think that child labor is illegal because you are hampering the normal growth of the child. Its against the law the employ a child for a labor or for money as a lot of employer are abusing this type of stuff. Here in our country employers who hire children will be persecuted.
