"Cast Away" is the most tragic movie ever

How could the character of Tom Hanks in the movie "cast away" ever survived such a long span of time living alone and in a deserted island? I don't think I could live that life and survive. What do you think is the force which moved him to live everyday of his life and struggle to survive? What could have been his motivation in not giving up?
