Is Technology really helping us ?

It seems to me we have become captives of our own tecnology these days. What we didn't need 10 years ago, we have become slaves to today. I spend countless hours at my computer, sometimes only out of habit, with no necessary goal in mind. I believe we have created a generation unable to socialize face to face. By not doing so we've lowerd the self esteme of a whole generation, not having the exsperiance to speak face to face. The days of sitting on the porch talking with friends passed away with "Leave it to Beaver". Am I wrong? Has technology really improved us?

I think technology is what you make it. It can be very helpful if you allow it to be. But if you become dependent on the technology and allow it to control you so to speak then you are running into a problem. Because if your technology or equipment ever goes out then you are in a world of trouble.

Past two decade we have achieved rapid advancement in technolgy especially in the field of computers and electronics.I think technological advancement is good in fields like medicine, health etc which really help us.The internet is the ultimate with which u can get any information you want i mean almost anything is available in the internet without which i could not have replied to this topic and u wouldnt have started earning in mylot lol..There are also many negitive aspects of technology.

Once again, I agree, medical advancments and all are an awsome thing. It's the negative impacts it's had on us as a society that bothers me. What will people be like 10 or 20 years from now? If we're loosing our ability to be social now, what will it be like then? I guess to narrow my question down, I'd have to ask it this way, "Has our tecnologcal advance been worth what we've done to this next generation?" Personally, I don't think so. So, what do you think, I mean we all agree that the tecnology in itself has been good, but was it a worthwhile trade?

I also agree with you that its not worth advancing .What we do is first we invent something like fast food then to burn all the fat we gain from it we build a new machine like any exercising machine. But this may not be true in all the fields.

The following line sums up this argument. An automated voice message on phone. For a list of the failures of technology press 3.

Haha, well put. My favorite are the sales people who call, only it turns out to be a sales recording. We can't even pester each other face to face any more. Your computer generated sales call gets answered by my computer answering machine, lol. ( Do you think they talk togather when we're not listening?). Even Bill Gates adressed this issue once. He warned us that we ( HE ? ) have created a generation of kids who have no concept of socializing except over the internet. Why is it we can be so bold on the net, and over the phone, yet we don't stand up in front of people face to face. If not seeing ach other face to face is " safer", then where will it go from here? Nice answers though, thanks.

Without technology we would not be chatting in this forum. It is sad that we lose some of the old ways, but we can only move forward. Some people are not able to express themselves in public & I believe that internet has brought out some of these people. So out of the bad some good has come.

Very good answer ! That's been my point. Using technology like this opens aworld of information, but closes personal communications. I think this is the exact reason why some people can't communicate with others well, they never have to. So, what's it going to be like in 15 years? Think it will get worse, or just stay the same?

when technology becomes a part of us we cant do without it. this is the greatest negative aspect of it. But on the other hand it has also facilitated life in various valuable ways.

i think so yes, technology is helping us, though there are some negative effects, i think that the help this technology is giving us is far greater than those of the negative ones. greetings. : )

this indeed is a question everyone got to think of... what i got to say is, "it all depends upon the person or community who make use of it and the need behind the use of technology"...

You taking the benefits of Technology in a wrong way 20 years ago we werent able to talk like face to face if we are in another country but it is just the technology which made us talk to out beloved through internet on webCam.Dont you think it has helped us?.It is not like lowering the self esmteme since it saves a lot of your time,if you goto your friend it wd take atleast 15 20mins or even 1 hour my friend lives so far instead of goin there i can easily ask him whatever i want.It has improved us in saving time and money.

yes technology is really helping us but it also has it's disadvantages.we have become so accustomed to it that we rely upon it for everything.we need to use it only for the benefit of human life.have a great day

There's a pros and cons to everything, and while technology is very convenient, it harms us in may way. Also, changes should be made steadily. We're living in a time where the advancement in technology is just too rapidly that now it loses what I would call the "balance"

of course it does, it's the obsession with the device that comes with it that makes it a burden...

looks like - we have
oh yes!i completely agree with what you are saying,i think with comming of technology we have forgotten the art of socializing we have forgotten those simple fun days we used to have by gathering around at homes,we have been reduced to their slaves.we dont know whats happening to our neighbour but we know whats happening in the world through the net,is it not shunning ourselves from outside world.

Basic human existance has never changed. We eat, poop, sleep. If any of these are inerrupted, we will be sick, perhaps die. Now, what we choose to do with our time has changed vastly. Using Technology for entertainment/lifestyle is a choice. If you want it to help your human existance, do so. If you do not, waste your time on it. I think back in the dark ages (when there were no computers or cellphones) there were things that could be just as distracting...I think the bigger issue is not having to work for an existence. Back in the day, humans had to work for their food, water, fire...now we have so much time on our hands that we sit in front of little lighted boxes, complaining that we are too busy. Hmmm

Yes, I understand what you are saying. I have thought a lot about this lately. In one way, technology has allowed us to work from home but it has also put a gap between what used to be neighbors. Instead of actually talking to them we email them. The personal touch has gone. I do it too. I have a neighbor 2 houses down that I haven't seen in 3 months but I just got an email from her this morning.

I think that what your saying makes a lot of sense, even in movies they try to warn us from technology (Pulse, Terminator, etc...) one day the very own technology we love so much will turn on us.

Technology is the best thing that ever happened to man since Jesus Christ. I couldn't imagine living a satisfying life without it, in the sense that it has destroy face to face communication it hasn't it just has broaden our field of communications, we aren't limited we can communicate with people through technology from all different backgrounds, countries, cultures and belief.
