People are scared because everything they know tells them to be scared: movies, television, books, preachers, folklore, fairy tales, etc. Witches are automatically associated with dangerous powers and dark magics, which harm others and are blasphemous against God. Of course, I can't know what you actually believe in because you haven't proclaimed what type of witch you are, what creeds you hold to, what (if any) gods you follow, orwhat path you walk. But if you're calling yourself a witch, I assume you mean it as a religion/spirituality and not as they fairy-tale type witch. In that case, people are probably afraid of you because they don't understand that you mean it that way. Or they are afraid because they believe that any gods/spirits/powers other than their own God is actually just the devil confusing and using people. So of course they're afraid. The easiest way to deal with this fear is not to stamp "I'm a witch" on your forehead. In fact, I prefer to establish myself as a person first, and then talk about my religion later. If someone already is aware that you are kind, or loving, or want to help others, they're not going to care as much when they find out that your religion differs from yours. And while just running around saying "I'm a witch" and scaring people causes their views on witchcraft to become more negative, establishing yourself as a contributing member of a community who also happens to be a witch will help foster positive views. Just a little food for thought.

Arg. Typos. Okay, I meant to say "If someone already is aware that you are kind, or loving, or want to help others, they're not going to care as much when they find out that your religion differs from theirs." I know I have some other typos in there, but that's the only one that really could cause a misunderstanding of what I was trying to say. I really wish there was an edit feature because when I'm into what I'm saying my fingers and brain go drastically different speeds.

People are scared because what the movies, tv and media shows about witches. Also it may be that according to their religion that witches are instruments of evil so they thought you'll do something bad to them. j
