Do you understand the cartoons our children are watching on T.V.?

I grew up watching bugs bunny, smurfs, snorks, dungeons and dragons, mickey mouse, etc. I think the years were maybe 1970-1983. (A long long long time ago.) The cartoons today I do not understand most of the time. I'm trying to figure out what the purpose is of a pokemon, digimon, digiball, yu-gi-oh, you name it. There doesn't really seem to be a story to them, just the same thing everytime. Isn't it amazing when I hear my son laughing, he is watching Scooby-doo, or Tom and Jerry, Pink Panther, etc. When he watches the newer cartoons, he just sits there in a trance. Why is this? Am I the only parent confused by the cartoons they are now producing?

I agree! I grew up watching the same cartoons as you...whatever happened to the smurfs? For the most part, my kids just sit in a trance when they're watching cartoons too...and there is so much violence in all the pokemon cartoons as well as all the other ones they watch. I don't understand them either, can't follow the storyline whatsoever even when my son tries to explain it to me, it still doesn't make sense to me. I'm definitely with you on the confusion part.

I enjoy when he watches the older cartoons. He is almost 7 now and nothing makes my heart happier more than when you hear him laughing. With all the pressure they have at school anymore, they need to enjoy being a kid.

Most likely it's the imaginative world that makes them so into it. The world is new and different to theirs and they wish oh so badly that theirs would be the same. It is also the suspense. Who is going to win who is going to lose. And by the way hasn't pokemon been on for the last 10 years? Anyways i do not understand it myself but that's from what i know and not from what i've seen :P Although there are some good cartoons out there: )

Good point. Pokemon might have been around for the last 10 yrs., but I've been around for almost 40. I'll agree there are some good ones. The Disney channel has some good ones, and we used to do a lot of Nick Jr., but he has outgrown those ones. Lilo and Stitch is still a favorite, and I actually enjoy sitting down watching that one with him.

wow, have you ever sat down with your child and actually watched one of these. Especially something as big as yu-gi-oh. It leaves the fascination of the whole fantasy world, but at the same time will leave background messages of friendship, believing in yourself, and building self confidence. I felt the same way you did until I actually sat down and watched them with him. There are a couple that are just plain stupid like Ed Edd and Eddy, but there are some good ones you just have to find the meaning

I don't really get yu-gi-oh, and I have sat down and watched it a few times. I'm all for kids using their imagination. I was a big si-fi fan when I was a kid, and I am still. Any sience fiction movie or book that came along I had to read. It all seems like a bunch of fighting for no reason at all too me.

I will agree, the Ed Edd and Eddy is about useless, and things like cat dog or whatever it is called. No sense in those at all.

lol, well, just look at it like Harry Potter, that's a great example, all the fantasy world stuff, and their in the background is a serious message about friendship, and self-confidence. You just have to look for it I guess. But even the stuff we used to watch, what meaning was in most of that. For example Wylee Coyote and Roadrunner. I would sit in a trance, but thinking back, there was absolutely no meaning to that cartoon at all. Except those 2 trying to hurt each other. So who knows, lol

Likewise, one of my favorite shows was Tom and Jerry. Or Spiderman and his friends. School House Rock, I don't know todays cartoons have changed just as the times has changed. It's not a cat running around trying to catch a mouse, It's more like how many pokemon you can catch..I don't get it either but our kids love it right? I still don't understand SpongeBob...Never even interest me...Hopefully with your topic I too can understand what's so cool about it...

I've never cared much for spongebob. Spiderman was always a favorite of mine. And I remember one called the Justice League too. They had all the superheroes working together.

The cartoons that you mention are about the battle between good and evil. They attempt to teach positive ways to combat evil with friendship, courage, and sacrifice. The evil villains are those whose obsession with power or vengence cause them to hate, destroy and corrupt. In some the villains after finally being defeated turn to good in an effort to seek redemption. All moral lessons, penetrating our children's subconcious while entertaining them. Things that in the past they may have learned from bible stories or sadly not at all. There are some laughs in these cartoons when the good guys get a rest from fighting evil but the sense of struggle and difficulty of the fight against evil is what makes the majority of the show. Parents are usually portrayed as being clueless or helpless to defeat the evil that happening around them. It is up to the children to save us. And perhaps they will!

Of course all children are different in the amount that they will absorb. My son is 10 and can name off all of the characters and what creatures they own and what their powers are so one has to hope that they are absorbing the moral lessons as well. We sometimes underestimate our children because they don't go around verbalizing all these lessons but I believe it is shaping their character to some extent. By showing the creatures fighting and not being killed just returning to their containment vessels when beaten, the show doesn't encourage the children to commit violence upon each other. The children are important in the battle though because it is their encouragement of their creatures and their strategy/intelligence that wins or loses the battle.

But at the age of maybe 9yrs. and under, do they really understand all of that? It seems to me that they just seem to think you meet someone you don't like, then you have to fight them. Also, it seems that they are not really using their intelligence to fight the battles, but using animal like creatures to do the fighting.

There are some really good modern cartoons: Lilo and stitch, buzz lightyear, recess, the weekenders, kim possible etc. But I agree there are some completely confusing modern cartoons such as dragon ball z (what kind of name is garlic junior anyway?). I even like pokemon. I must admit that of the older cartoons I hated the road runner show and always wished that the poor coyote would catch that rotten roadrunner.

Those are the new cartoons I let him watch. Toon Disney is okay. And I liked noggin for when he was younger. Lilo and Stitch is a favorite now, and they even have the Disney website that he can go and play the online game.

There is a lot of violence in todays cartoons BUT look at the old black and white cartoons. We recently bought a few of those $1 cheapo cartoons for the heck of it. Well even the old black and white cartoons are bad. They smoke, fight etc. My kids love Veggie Tales and Disney movies. We need to allow them to have an imagination, yet at the same time there is a limit. They need reality too :)

I'm not a parent but I still love cartoons and I love the Boomerang chanel so I can watch some of those old ones. The ones you mentioned that are jap anime I don't get either, but what really gets to me is the stupid grose ones they have. Like that ed, edd, and eddie, my gym partner is a whatever, and Spongebob. I don't get how those ones are funny at all, but I see kids laugh like crazy over them even more the more disgusting it gets. Then the one with the people dressed up in bright colors that jump up and down and talk all in baby talk with a high pitch. Really Television is getting riddiculus. I wouldn't have my kids watch that if I had any kids.

I was not born on 1970 but have seen those classic cartoons such as "Tom & Jerry" "Coyote" "Wacky Races" and things like that. Nowadays there's some cartoons I like although I don't have time to watch it often.

I remember watching richie rich, tom and jerry and all the mickey and donald show. but nowadays the cartoons are so full of violence and even the technology involved is so complicated than the simple goofy and mickey shows. i am also worried about the quality of the cartoons. Thankfully my daughter is too small to be hooked on to cartoons. she watches the sesame street shows but thats about it. I intend to buy her some cartoons dvds of yester years but then i can only try!

The children are understanding some of the images. They can better understand the images than real pictures. Thats how their brain is developed at this stage. You raised a valuable point by this. For sure some cartoons are ridiculous and not appropriate for children. Indeed I faced the same problem of not understanding the cartoons, myself.

I am very picky about what my daughter watches. I don't like the japanese cartoons either. But the ones that really bother me are the ones on Nick like Catdog or cow and chicken? I mean, it seems like cartoons like these can traumatize children for life. Even disney is getting a little out of control. There is one channel called noggin that I am not worried about at all...from 6am to 6pm for preschoolers. They are fun and meaningful. Children acctually learn from these cartoons, and I don't mind sitting and watching them with her :)

Nick jr. and noggin used to be favorites, but unfortunately he has outgrown those ones. There are alot I will not allow him or our 11 yr. old to watch. Another Nick cartoon I never cared for was Johnny Bravo.

I'm not sure about not remembering. I still remember alot of the cartoons I watched when I was little. I won't let my kids get addicted to the cartoons, I only let them watch them in the morning before school. And the for maybe an hour after school.

I grew up with Smurfs, Bugs, etc too, and the cartoons that I see now, are so not for children, the sense of humour and the references you need to get to understand what's going on with the characters is pretty deep and intense, they make me laugh more than the kiddos.

I can totally relate. My 14 yr old sometimes watches them too. and he does the same thing. There is NO theme. No rhyme or reason. it "just is" and it makes you wonder how this garbage stays on TV.

I don't care for the Pokemon stuff either. But when my son was little he loved that show. He's 10 now and doesn't really care for it lol. I like some of the cartoons on today, especially Nickelodeon cartoons. But I am also a big fan of the classics like Scooby Doo. My 6 year old daughter will pick Scooby Doo over a lot of the newer cartoons on.

Good clean cartoons is all i allow her to watch. I LOVE tom and jerry! im going to see if i can find some of the shows i used to watch as a kid on dvd or vhs tape for her to watch.

Yes! the old cartoons were by far better. I am with you on that I cannot figure out anything on the new ones, basically just a bunch of graphics, violence, and stupid story lines. i wish they would bring back some of the old ones.
