As of November 2005 I was put off of work so I could have my leg operated on, as some old members may already no as I have posted this previously a few months ago. Here is the dilemma: As of right now January 22nd I am up and around, and feeling fairly well, the wounds have not yet healed and it is going on over 2 months, I am on EI disability leave from work, and my employer has been the best and has told me countless times that my job is always there, when I am ready to return. I am still going back and forth to see my Doctor, but as of yet he still hasn't given me the go ahead to return to work, he hasn't even given me date of return, I really don't know why and this is what scares me...you see, if this operation didn't work, then there was a chance I may lose the leg, and right now the healing is going so slow I am getting worried. I still have therapy to attend to, and just recently I had to be fitted for a special garment to increase circulation in the leg, this piece of work cost me $300.00. The problem I am having is anxiety, I am sitting around the house doing nothing other than being on this computer, there are tonnes of things in the house that need to be done but I am no supposed to do, I am getting bored and want to return to work, and the medical supplies that I need are costing me and extra $30.00 a week to buy. I really don't know what to do, just say the heck with it and return to work and let nature take its course, or stay at home and wait till I am healed before returning to work, thing is , what if after all this I end up losing my leg anyway, then I will be out of a job, the house will never get completed, and all the money spent on medical supplies and gas to the Doctors office will be for nothing. Please any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated, just need to hear fe word of encouragement to keep me going. Sorry about such a long post.

I'm very sorry to hear about your current health problems Wildguy. If you have been signed off on Disablitily leave on the advice of your doctor then you shouldn't go back to work until they say it is safe. I'll assume that you have asked for a date or timescale of when he thinks you could go back to work and and as you say it'a the fact that he hasn't been able to which may be causing this anxiety. First of all and most obviously you have to talk to your doctor aboth your concerns. He may be vague about it because he is unsure but he should be made aware of how anxious it is making you feel as I'm sure it can't be good for your recovery. Depending on your mobility and physical condition you could try relaxation techniques like Yoga, massage or meditation. A change of diet may help. Decreasing the amounts of Caffine and sugar may be beneficial and certain foodstuffs are proported to be anti-anxiety like passionfruit and camomile tea.

The last 2 times I visited my Doctor, I had asked if he knew when I might be able to return to work, he said I don't know, and that I should not return until ready, as I do not want a repeat performance that got me here in the first place. When I had the operation, they were supposed to admit me in the hospital for 3 or 4 weeks, but never did, why I do not know, but that definitely would have helped, being under constant care of nurses and no home stress, would most likely have helped me heal faster. I do not have enough real mobility to perform yoga. I do use meditation and have always used it for healing and pain. I definitely should change my diet as right know it isn't exactly great, and I do consume far to much caffeine. Thanks for the great encouragement and tips.

Wildguy I am so sorry to read this I didn't know I could not have been around when you posted the Discussion or you would have been receiving a lot of encouragement from me and I mean that First of all you need to tell your Doctor that you want to know the score do not let him fob you of with time will tell you need answers and you need them now you need to know what is your Future so you can plan round it if he does not tell you then get a second opinion, I was told straight out by my Doctor after being bullied out of job fighting the Company for 6 months and getting worse through the stress that I would never be able to work again due to my Lungs being to weak and the severe breathing Problems I have You have every right to know what is going on and your Doctor is not being open with you Do not give up but do not just go back to work get that Doctor to do his Job properly and keep fighting

I know what you are saying as you know I am in this situation and there is still times that I just want to give up but I can't I have to make the best of things When you go please insist that he tells you the Score do not be fobbed of with well time will tell that is not good enough you want to know where you stand It might not be what you want to hear but at least you can plan from there it is hard to go from active to this I know that better then anyone and I still despair that is why I have to take Medication to stop my Anxiety and depression and I am a fighter and I know you are a Fighter Please keep me informed wildguy I really feel for you And if the Doc still doesn't tell you get a second Opinion as I think you should anyway with the slow healing Process

Hi wildguy, it must be stiffling to sit around and do nothing when you feel well inside. My advice is also same as others, you must talk to your doctor may be explain your financial concerns and ask him if you can rejoin your job if you are extra careful regarding straining yourself or taking on heavy work. May be do some office kind of work as you yourself say healing is real slow may be your doctor is the best judge of the matter, you can take a second opinion though. Depends on how much you can move right now. Listen if your just bored then better not try ny hanky panky in case your case worstens. If your leg gets saved by sitting around then better save it. It will be worth it, sometimes god takes a test of our patience and may be he wabts you to lrearn acceptance of the situation so try some meditation and wait for the healing to come. You can try doing reiki on your leg. It may help to hjeal you faster, reiki can accomplish miracles and I do believe that. Its my personal experience too. try this site and may be it will help you http://www.reiki.org/

Mansha, thanks for the words of advice and encouragement, my mobility is OK I can get around, but if I try to stay on my feet to long my leg starts to swell and then starts to hurt. I am going to see my Doctor this week and will bring these problems I have to his attention, and also find the date of return to work. The job I have has the possibility of office work and I have been offered this, but it also entails floor work, which right now I cannot do as that is what got me where I am. Being bored is my biggest problem right now, I have a very active mind and not being able to fulfill these actions is driving me crazy, the more I sit the more I see that I could be doing. Patience never was a virtue with me, I have very little of it, and a lot of people see that in me as I try to do 50 different things at once. I am still healing, just so very slow, and slow healing plus little patience equals trouble....

Wildguy, be 100% compliant to what your doctor has told you to do.Thet includes being absolutely meticulous about infection control, hand washing, etc. and if you are a smoker, QUIT. Without a doctor's release, your boss will probably not allow you to set foot on the place, for fear of lawsuits. I am sure your are bored. Yes, medical supplies are expensive. Do you eat well? Try making sure you get more protein to help you tissues heal. Maybe even the protein like body builders take. If doc has prescribed some exercises, do them heartily and consistently, and imagine yourself healing. Do not let the anxiety take over. Physiologically it can cause your blood flow to decrease. Some of our friends from India would tell you to meditate, I would tell you to pray. Private message a friend, they will write back. Keep your hope up. Post more on myLot. Tell us what you plan for when you are well.

Garden thanks for your concerns and words, I am very cautious about infections and have a vitamin routine I follow daily, I keep the leg elevated as much as possible. My boss already told me that I can come back to work part time if I feel up to it, he has some accounting and inventory for me to work at, but being on EI disability, I don't want to take the chance of losing that and maybe not being able to work. I am trying daily to find something else to keep me occupied but the list is short, as physical activities are a no no. This computer is even starting to bore me, and I do look daily for something online to keep me mentally sound and fit. My biggest problem is I like to be challenged mentally, and doing what I have been for the last 3 months isn't doing that. Thanks again for the great concern and words of help, I will make it, I have to as I have to many people relying on me that I cannot afford to fail.

Thank you for the kind words and advice, I have already tonnes of online programs that keep me busy daily, just that it gets monotinous after awhile, doing basically the same thing over and over, when I was able to, I would work online for a few hours, then do some renovation work to the house, I love working with my hands and not being able to do this is where the problem lies. It is nice to know that I can depend on the Mylot members to be there for me, even though I know none of you personally, you all make me feel like I new you my whole life, that is a great feeling to have and I thank you for this.

Hello wildguy, I feel sad for what you are going through. I can try to feel your pain as i have numerous ups and downs in my life too. If i would had read your previous post i would surely been around to always encourage you from then on itself. I think you should always think positive don't ever allow negative thoughts to creep in. When you feel positive in every way possible, you generate positvity through your thoughts, words, body language and that postive vibes are felt by the whole body. So try to do yoga, meditation just sit on your bed or mat with in crosslegged postion and then close your eyes and fopcus in middle of your forehead and chant word like OMmmmm.... it reverberates through body, mind, spirit and it will feel postivity seeping in and you feel relaxed and nice. then chanting of prayers and deep breathing exercises will also reduce worries, negativity. i think you should consult your doctor and demand that you ahve right to know how long the treament will go on so that you can plan your future. Also trying talking to ohter senior doctors or specialists who can help you out. or talk to hospitals' adminstration demanding answers. And dont' try to be in ahurry as healing after operation can take time and no two cases are samer as complcations can arise. So try to look for some creative workd to do atr home in mean while, like gardening, painting, writing, being on mylot lot more, or talking with friends and family and try to work from home too. I feel you need to be strong . I sinceerrely hope that god helps those who help themselves. and since youa r nice guy nice thing swill happen to you. Best of luck. keep posting and do inform about progress you made.

Banta, your words are a healing in themselves, I thank you for being such a great listener and a great person of understanding. I do have my own type of meditation I use when needed, this I have learned through the years to deal with pain, It helps relax my mind and my muscles so blood flow can increase.. I know you and many others would never know this about me, but I was in a fire accident years ago that left me basically destroyed in body. When you have the type of damage done to your body that I had, pain is a daily routine, so through it all you have to tech yourself ways to deal with the pain other than pain killers, this is where I learned my type of meditation. It helps both mentally and physically, but does nothing for my active mind and the boredom I feel, not to mention the state of useless feelings I feel. Contending with my own active mind is that hardest part I am dealing with, my mind wants me to do everything I used to do, but my body says no you can't, it is like a constant war of mind and body. I will keep you and everyone interested up to date as information come to me. Thank you again for the advice and thoughts of me.

I honestly can understand your situation. I had been dealing with a similar situation myself. First off, try to find something that will help you occupy your time. I do book reviews to make extra money, it also keeps my mind working and I can do them in any position so if I need to lie down or sit up or whatever, I can. Perhaps you could find something like that and while it isn't going to pay you tons it might be enough to give you an extra couple bucks here and there. Secondly, your physical health and mental health are definitely connected. If you are not healing mentally and facing daily anxiety then your physical healing may not be up to par either. Talk to your doctor. See if there's not something he/she could recommend, even if it's medication. Personally, I say stay home and get healthy. I understand your frustration but you will do nobody any good (yourself, your employer or your family) if you go against what is best for you physically and end up making yourself even sicker. I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck.

Hockeygal, thank you for your advice, sound like I could learn from you as you seem to have your similar problem beat down fairly good. I really do not know what could be done about my anxiety, the only medication I can even think of would have to be a relaxer, or sleeping pill to knock me out for the next while till I heal. Staying off my feet is the real challenge I am facing...I am not supposed to be up an around and this is another problem that is plaguing me, staying inactive is not in my vocabulary.

You need to sit down with the doctor and get some things sorted out, like does he think the operation was a success? if not, can they do another operation or what are the chances of that succeeding? If he says the chances of a good heal are not very good, you will have to decide whether or not you want further surgery or whether to wait and see what happens. Talk to both your boss first and ask what sort of work you could do on a part time basis if you can get a clearance from the doctor. then talk to the doctor, tell him what the boss said about part time work. tell the doctor that you want to work part time amd cam he give you a certificate to say you can work for so many hours a day or so many days a week, without specifing any particular times or days. that will give you an incentive plus the additional money you will get. also check regarding the medical things you will need, as you might be able to get them through the hospital at a cheaper rate. also remember in australia that you only pay for so many prescriptions every calendar year. do you have a health care card? if not, check with centrelink whether you are eligible for one considering your circumstances. if you can get one, call the gas and electricity companies and ask if you are entitled to any discount on those bills. ask the chemist whether or not there is a generic brand of the stuff you are getting on prescription, talk to telstra about your phone because they have discounts for certain types of people. also if you have a health care card, send me a personal message because i know an IP who have cheap internet for pensioners, seniors, health care card holders etc. it might save you a little bit of extra money, which is always important but right now more important than if you were working full time.

You are doing the right thing by letting your leg heal. You must rest, or you may actually be out of work for a longer period of time. Have you thought about taking customer services calls for some of the telemarketing organizations? Check out wahjforreal.com, they may be able to give you something that you could do at home to make some extra money to pay the bills. Hang in there, things will get better soon.

hi, wildguy, first of all i need a smile from your side. now look there is one saying by our country respected father of nation that " DONT COMPARE YOUR GRIEF WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE ABOVE YOU, JUST LOOK AT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU WHO ARE LESS PRIVILEGED THAN YOU": THE ESSENCE of the saying is that dont loose hope about life crushing yourself towards life by keep thinking n lamenting at the present situation. you know what we alll get only one life in this earth. why not just make things beautiful here. i know we can not deny the present situation but come up with new ideas. dont even think of going back to work in this contition. follow your doctor advice. now the way you feel depends on your self. do things that make you happy or make other happy. just keep your self busy. you can start a home tuition or some thing. just remember my friend our existence is by god wish n he will surely make you go through the best days of your life... lots of love to you. get well soon

Thank you, I do you those words everyday, and they are my driving force, to be as best as I can and to show others that I can be, and I never judge those below me and always look to those above me for guidance. I take my strength from those less fortunate and this is what keeps me going. I try to use the word "can't" as my force to be the best I can, and use everyday as a challenge, but lately it seems that I cannot meet my challenges and this is what is bothering me. I thank you for your words of encouragement and guidance.

Continue to see your doctor as scheduled but be very sioncere with him of how you feel emotionally as well. Tell him you need to get back to work for your own sanity and demand he be honest with you about your progress. If you feel that something is missing in your care/aftercare from your current doctor you can always opt for a second opinion. I wish you luck-and keep us posted on your progress.

My sincere advice is that since the operation has been done for your leg you should take rest as per the doctor's advice. If therapy is required let that be done but how long is it since you have done the operation. Anyway, your leg is very important. I feel if the employer has promised that you would not lose your job there is nothing to worry about. Please have some courage.

really sorry to your situation, you should not fell depressed, just keep hope up.first you should be compliant to your doc, attend to your therapy, each time when you are at your doctor's house, let doc know your anxiety to your leg,and ask doc to give something about your leg, whether it's healing.you must know the situation of your leg at times. second, when you feel boring, you can DIY somthing home,or read books, even you can write someting to kill your time, find something interesting, and be fascnated with it.sometimes you can address to your friends...and so on,just find something to make yourselt feel confortable.do not think it's a bad thing, thinking like that maybe this accident is a chance that god give to let you have a long vacation, just enjoying your time while being compliant to your therapy. this can make you are in good mood, and i believe you will heal soon

well, i am very sorry for listening that from you. I think the best you can do is wait until you get better, and tell your doctor that you want to know the true, make him feel that you really need to do it, for that you can feel better with yourself. I wish the best and i hope things go well for you. Have a nice day and God bless you

I think it would depend on the type of work you do. If you have a job where you are on your feet all day long, like working in an assembly line at a factory, or working as a barber, I would stay at home until you improve some more. Do you have any healing issue? ie Diabetes? That will delay your recovery as well. Now if you job is sedentary like an office worker where you can maybe go back part time and see how well you do, you may want to consider that. Losing your leg is something you want to avoid. I know it is rough to be stuck at home and having $$ problems. But your health is more important

It could be that your main problem is stress. I'm no expert but from what I understand unhealthy levels of stress reduce the ability of a person's body to heal itself. This means that if a person has the flu (or a physical injury) and a low level of stress they will get well sooner than a person in a similar situation but with a high level of stress. It could be that in your situation you have been experiencing a great amount of stress due to being away from work coupled with the added the financial troubles of paying for medical treatment. As you sit at home infront of your computer and the stress piles on (if this is infact happening)the natural healing processes of your body are being impaired causing you to miss more work and adding to your troubles exponentially. You asked whether you should stay at home and wait or return to work and risk loosing your leg. The answer may be that you shouldn't do either. The thing to do may be as simple as reducing or removing from your life those things that are causing you the greatest amount of stress. I know that this is probably easier for me to say than it would be for me to do if I were in your shoes, but hear me out. There are things that a person in your situation can do that are very effective at reducing anxiety and stress, like meditation. Before you dissmiss this idea as a little too eccentric for your tastes (if you were thinking along those lines) you should know that I myself do not meditate; I live in Texas (not Austin); have worked in manual labor jobs most of my life; I don't claim to be a guru; a physician; or have any special insight into the meaning of life or any other such nonsense. I do, however, have a minor in philosophy. In college I took an history course called "The Philosophy of Religion" in which the class studied the history of Budhism, Hinduism, and Christianity. All of which, apparently, incorporate some form of meditation into their practices. To make a long story short, though the general public may associate meditation with religion or religious practices in reality the two can co-exist independently of one another. Meditation in a secular setting context is, to say the least, extremely well suited for stress reduction. I know this because in the beginng of each class my Philosophy of Religion class was required by our professor to do so for ten minuites. If we did not wish to meditate our professor gave us the option of sitting quietly at our desks while the rest of the class did so. I decided to give it a try since I had to sit there anyway. I'm a pretty laid back guy so passing that class I haven't felt the need to meditate on a regular basis. As you will find out the simple act of controlling your breathing (long deep breaths in and out) and counting each breath up to ten and then repeating for ten minuites, without being distracted by your internal dialogue, is extremely difficult and takes a great amount of willpower and self discipline. Here's a link. http://stress.about.com/od/tensiontamers/p/profilemeditati.htm
