Can someone please give me some examples of foods with "empty calories". I'm not quite sure what this term means.

Empty calories are calories that you ingest that have no nutritional properties. There are calories in an apple, but there are also vitamins and nutrients your body needs. There are 400 calories in a Little Debbie, but your body will gain nothing but weight from ingesting it, as it is pure sugar and preservatives. (Delicious though!)

So something like chips and cookies that have calories and no protein or vitamins? What about something like hot dogs and bologne that have some protein and vitamins, but tons of preservatives and sodium? Are they considered empty calories?

food with no nutritional value. I think that foods like hotdogs and such may be subjective - but really there isn't anything good in them unless they are turkey or organic. I think that most foods our kids eat nowadays are empty calories. I think of things like cookies, chips, soda etc.
