Valentine's Day - what do you think of it?

I've noticed already that there are a lot of threads on MyLot about Valentine's Day, - so I was wondering - what are your views on it? Personally I hate it - I think it's just some huge commercial scam to make money for the card manufacturers etc, and I definately don't need a day on the calendar to tell my partner I love him. I loathe all the big red hearts and schmaltzy verses! At the moment it is not such a big deal in the UK where I live so I can try and ignore it, but I know it is big in the States. So I wondered - what do you think of it? Do you celebrate it, or do you just treat it as another day, and buy your partner flowers or go out for dinner on another less expensive, more private day?

To me, Valentine's Day is just another of those days for the restaurants or florists to charge obscene amount of money for a meal or a bouquet of flowers. I think it's more important that my husband treats me well everyday. Maybe that's unromantic my many women's standard, but hey, I'm just being very practical. Honestly, I don't know how I can feel romantic dining in a restaurant on Valentine's Day when it's packed to it's maximum capacity & they can't wait for you to vacate the table so that the next couple on the waitlist can fill the seats! All these years, whether with my ex-boyfriends or husband, we've always spent the evening at home with a simple, but nice & cozy dinner. :D

Well I don't have anything against Valentine's Day but I do hate the thought that people have to buy something for the person they love. I just hate that. I mean it's a day about loving the ones you already love. Not wasting your money buying gifts and flowers oh and can't forget the chocolates. Everything is about money now, commercialism. So is Mother's and Father's Day, it's a day for your parents to know that you care for them, adore them, and that you love them. It's not meant to buy them things! God! That is what you have birthdays and Christmas. Money and commercialism is ruinning everything.

Great comments and I totally agree with you. As I said earlier, we don't have quite so much hype surrounding these things in the UK so I manage to avoid as lot of them - but I agree that if you love someone then you should show them and tell them everyday, not just on one day a year!!!

It's a hallmark holiday as my husband puts it and at first I was offended. Then he explained that he doesn't need one special day to tell me how much he loves me. If he can't do it everyday then why do it at all. At first I thought he was nuts but we were just dating. As the years past he always treated me special we don't celebrate valentines day and he always brings me something home just to tell me he loves me not everyday of course but enough for me always to feel special and that he loves me. I think that is better than any one day. He's not always right as I always tell him but this time I will give him credit. And yes I do the same for him but I have to admit not as much as he does for me.

For us here in Finland the ValentineĀ“s Day isnĀ“t so menainful like for example the the usa, in fact in Fonland its called simple "friends day" and we remember all our friends, not only the ones we love.

Love is in the air - Show love all year round
We celebrate it. But we also let each other know in different ways all through the year. I like Valentines day because it gives those that are afraid to express to a girl or boy that they like them. They can get a card that says it all or send them flowers. I think they should at least wait until the middle of January or the end of it before they start putting things out for Valentines day tho. But to each his or her own. Some loathe it and some love it. I love it rather we go out or stay in for a private dinner.

I know friend this is big commercial for some bussinessman, and I know these day some couple thimk shold have to love each other or they do just for fun. But for me I like this date and I like to celebrate with my bf alone, but no big parties.. but we like to share something in this day. because sometimes somedays we have to refresh love because otherwise it ll become boring. if some person having girlfrind/boyfrind is not problem but make her/him happy is bit task thing. And i aslo use this for be relax with my bf.

I love Valentine's day- It usually starts out with a big breakfast for the 3 of us (daughter, me and sig. other) then off to work and school. I always send my daughter flowers on Valentines day- She gets a big kick out of it-- And it reminds her how much I love her! I come home to homemade cards from her.. and flowers usually from sig. other-- Usually my daughter an I make a special dinner and desert and we share it together- the 3 of us.... It is just like any other day- but it reminds you to be extra loving!

Hi there ! Its a pity that we , the humans never change ! These sort of days come and go ! We have different types of "DAYS" like international blood donation day, womens day, aids day, childrens day etc etc.. These days are only for the creamy section of the society, who debate and talk and conduct meetings infront of the TV cameras ! Otherwise "these days" dont mean anything to the general common man ! Valentines day is like one of those days ! wastage of the national resources ! right ? best wishes !

Valentine's day is the day for lovers and a day of love and feelings attached to it. I think anyone can show his or her love on that particular day.Its a colourful day which includes Flowers,Greeting cards, gift etc.I personally never celebrated it but definately want to taste this day.

I don't like the commercializm of the day. I love being in love, but I will choose for me and my hubby along with our child to spend the evening together and I will make a nice meal for us. NO CARDS NO GIFTS. I would rather the money be spent on our bills or a cute toy for our son.

I don't celebrate velentine's days. It's just the same day as any other day. Why do I have to celebrate it ? Why do I have to spend money on flowers or foods on that perticular day. I can give my love one flowers and take her to dinner or lunch on any other day. I can tell her how much I love her everyday. I don't have to wait for velentine. To celebrate a velentine's day is just a waste of money and time and effort. It's just nonsense.

I think of it as a romantic day, but I don't really go out of my way to celebrate it. I make it a point to spend the evening with my girlfriend and maybe go out some place simple or stay in and cook together and watch a movie. But as for the $50 a plate dinners and dozens of roses, I've never been into all that and I'm not going to start because of Valentine's Day.

I agree, I am not a big fan of Valentines Day either. I usually pick up a little something for my kids but my spouse and I rarely celebrate together. I try to let my family know I love them every day not just one day created by the gift industry.
