What happened to common sense?

Maybe I am having a bad day here, but I am wondering if anyone else in customer service has similar problems. I deal with a lot of people in a day, but today seems horrible. First, it seems all these people have lost their mind. Why would you call a phone number and start asking questions, then 10 minutes later mention you need a pen and can I repeat myself? Then...a man called and asked for a price and started telling me how high my price was, which it is not, but again, if you think it is too high, hang up and move on, you will not change my mind. After that a man came in carrying his floor mat for his car. Speaking about mud in the street. Seriously.......... what can I do about mud and why do I need to look at your car mat? Does anyone else feel common sense is out the window and society is getting stupid or lazy?

It sounds like you really did have a bad day, sorry about that. I think the problem is people wait to ask questions or complain about something until they are at the end of their rope. As for the guy complaining about your price, he was trying to bully your price down. My response to people like him has always been, "Wow that sounds like a great deal. If I were you I would take them up on it."

Thanks, you have me laughing for sure. The key word being "them" up on that. So...I would no longer have to deal with him. I love the way you think! Yes, I do think some people wait to tell me about something until they are so frustrated and then I bear the brunt of it all. I try and tell my new residents as soon as you notice something, please tell me, but they rarely do.

So right on there you are. In Customer Service, I think common sense has about gone out the window. People do not take time to Stop and think, and they seem to want it now, and when that does not happen, that is your fault, and who cares if they did something to make it be maybe theirs? Since I work as a Dispatcher for a Cab Company, I see this all of the time, and really wonder how people can be like this. What happen to the Good ole days?

I bet you encounter a ton of people as a dispatcher. You are right though, I wonder how miserable these people must be all the time. And how they can look me in the eye the next time they come in trying to act all nice. That is a thought I ponder frequently. Thanks for the reply!

Don't you know that common sense went out of style long ago? Truly I admire you for being able to deal with customer service day after day. I'm sure I'd want to punch someone. Demands are so ridiculous. I've worked as a teacher, and some of the things parents want are so crazy and are completely out of the realm of reality. I had one daycare parent tell me that she wanted the teachers to quit serving certain snacks to the children. I told her that the other parents liked what we were doing. She said, "That's because those other parents don't know how wrong they are. I'm looking out for them." Duh!

Thank you! I think you are right "out of style" describes a lot about society today. I can only imagine how hard teaching was. I am the treasurer for my church preschool, but thankfully I only deal with parents when their account is past due. I hear stories though from the teachers. Hats off to you. And some days, I do not deal well with customer service. A couple of my tenants, I have told only to come in for a repair or a rent payment. Otherwise I do not want to deal with you anymore. I hate to be that way, but when you reach your limit, what else can you do?

Yes, I met many unique people in my job. I may start a book about them all.

I originally started my degree in elemenatary education. I had a class called "higher order thinking". I think there must have been a gap when teachers did not teach these skills: thinking, thinking to back up your opinion, "devil's advocate", putting yourself in someone else's shoes, "thinking outside the box", etc. A lot of people do not use their God-given brains. Yes, there are people with underdeveloped thinking skills, and we're not talking about these people. But, it's unfortunate that some people do not use their brains to their capacity.
